I use this by my desktop computer. Cat5e cable comes in from downstairs (router) and plugs into this gigabit switch. A short Cat6 cable goes to the desktop computer. Another short Cat6 cable stays close by to plug into either my laptop or notebook computers when I need them. Rubber pads on the bottom will keep it from moving around on top of a desk; however, I mounted it vertically on a wood shelf with the ports facing down with the included 2 screws. The cord on the included AC adapter was plenty long for my needs. The centerline distance between the holes in the back of the switch are 1-13/16 -- not 1-3/4 or 2. I don't know what led Netgear to pick what I would call a kind of non-standard dimension; it's much easier to pick off more common dimensions on a ruler than 1-13/16 when trying to install the switch.
