This camera will give you terrific colors and detail during the daylight, but as soon as the sun sets it diminishes very quickly. The HD files can be used in Final Cut through the log and transfer utility. You can then run them through compressor to give you some nicely sized files that you can save. I am a professional using this for personal home use as well as a backup when on jobs. It's small and lightweight and gives high enough quality that I can set it up on a tripod for a second or third angle as a backup. The AVCHD files are humongous when converted into a .mov file at high quality however. So beware! I basically triples the size. The microphone kind of stinks as it picks up everything like the zoom motor and moving of the view screen and your hand shifting. So I highly recommend the Canon DM-100 shotgun microphone that attaches to the mini hotshoe of this camera. The cinema mode is kind of hype. I leave it on because it seems to give slightly more contrast and vibrance. But I need to learn more about it. There are a lot of difference quality recording modes to give you flexibility of how much memory you have and how much recording time you need. The 17mbps seems to be very good and the 24mbps highest quality might not be that much better. The 24p is also kind of hype since it's not really recording in 24p but using a pulldown. A program like Final Cut will recognize the files as 30p. So you need to use compressor to convert them to 24p. The short version of the story is that you should just record in 30p which I've heard gives you slightly better lowlight performance anyway, and then just convert the files to 24p to use with other camera's native 24p footage. The touch screen has gotten a bad rap from some reviewers. The responsiveness is a bit slow, but beside that I don't have a problem with it.

i have couple projects for movie and this camera works very well. since this camera is small, i can easily bring anywhere and i can be ready to shoot so quick i don't miss any subject. also, this camera has a specific function that i always wanted to take advantage of. it has 24p (looks like film) function for recording. oh my god, i thought 24p function is only for professional cameras, which are all huge bodies. this small camera has everything i need!

Some things I noticed about this camera. Pros: First you can record in 24p, 30p and 60i and at Full HD 1080. Second the one BIG difference between this camera and the VIXIA HF M40 other then the hard drive space is that this camera has a viewfinder which is great if its to bright outside to see the flip out screen. Third is the zoom range, it has very good zoom range you could aim your camera a few blocks and still look great. Fourth thing is the setting to change from automatic settings, manual settings and cinema settings with just a push of a slide button. This helps if you don't know or want to put certain settings such as 30p 24p or 60i and color settings. Cons: Notice: Most of my problems are with small when aiming at things like dimes quarters close range but can be fixed by a macro lens. First problem that I have had is the focusing, sometimes its hard for the camera to adjust to small things if its close and not in the middle of the camera. (Can be fixed by macro lens if aiming at something small and close) Second problem is the still images. They seem very grainy when maximized to actual size only noticed this when looking at something small. But this isn't a reason not to buy this camcorder. If you want to take pictures by a camera.

Needed an HDMI splitter that could specifically take a 1080 / 24p signal from an Avid via BlackMagic output and duplicate it for two screens simultaneously. It seems to work as I need it two. The two screens are maybe a few milliseconds apart in terms of sync but that could also be a product of the internals of each monitor, as one is a television and the other is a Ben Q 2700U. Anyway, happy to recommend this device!

I researched many camcorders including the Sony HDR-HC7. The 24p feature puts this in the lead hands down. Easy to use and the picture looks amazing. For those that don't know, they use 24p or cinema mode on a lot of TV shows, and it's only a feature found on prosumer or pro camcorders. Even my wife watches and says she loves how it looks. Buy this and you won't be disappointed. Problems Encountered: Slows down pic on cinema mode in low light. Previous Equivalent Items Owned: Sony DCR-PC100 Items I Recommend: better battery
