I bought this to scan 35 mm negatives with the Nikon ES-2 Digitizer Set. Works a treat. The lens is very sharp and light. Optically, it's perfection. It just doesn't look impressive, with that tiny front element. Heck, it may see some use other than in scanning, some day.

I ordered a Kodak Reels digitizer to convert a pile of Super8 films into digital video. After finishing the fourth reel, the Reels unit failed to power back on. The B&H return service was superb and I had a replacement unit within a week. The replacement has performed flawlessly. Each 400' reel of Super8 took about four hours to scan. The only significant problem I encountered was with heavily spliced films. The splices would get stuck in the serpentine leading to the take-up reel. The scanning continued normally, but with nowhere to go, the scanned film ended up on the table and floor. I also found that the digitizer continued scanning even when the end of the film was reached, requiring a manual stop. The quality of the scans are good, and the MP4 output is easily edited using your favorite editor. If you have a large pile of Super8 to digitize, the REELS Digitizer will save you some money over the commercial services. Just expect to spend some time monitoring the process to make sure it stays on track.

BLUF: This is a great digitizer and I recommend it, with some caveats. Some of the other reviews talked about needing to babysit the digitizer and I totally agree. In my case, the older metal reels (5 and 7) don't fit tightly on the shaft and tend to wobble, eventually falling off if I don't pay attention, even with the provided adaptor. Also, the film sometimes comes off the spools for reasons I haven't been able to figure out. Because the digitizer scans frame-by-frame, it is a time-consuming process. Having to babysit the digitizer means you can't really multi-task. Lastly, the directions aren't great and I resorted to watching a YouTube video to fully understand how the digitizer was supposed to operate once I took it out of the box. That said, I am REALLY impressed with the quality of the scans. I have a box of 40 to 50-year-old Super 8 reels and to have them scanned at a local lab would be crazy expensive (at $0.39/foot). Even though this project is taking longer than expected, it has been fun to get these precious memories in a more sharable format.

We love movies and don't go to brick and mortar theaters anymore for a number of reasons. We have been using home projection for over 6 years now and our first projector of choice was Epson PowerLite 1450 which we loved. Unfortunately. it had to be replaced. After studying what is now available we went with Home Cinema 3800. It is slightly larger and heavier, but we don't intend to move it around (We have a smaller more portable Epson Projector as well - EX 7230). The 3800 has 3,000 lumens of brightness while the 1450 had 4200. There wasn't an alternate that was in our acceptable price range. On the positive side, it has an outstanding picture quality and also can show 3D movies which we promptly purchased the required 3d glasses. We already own a 3d Blu-ray player . It has been fun watching the Hobbit, Avatar, and Top Gun Maverick in 3D. Very exciting. The 3800 is quieter which is important because it is positioned very close to us. For sound, we don't rely on its two speakers because we've always plugged it into our Soundbar system and receive great sound! So we are able to stream movies and TV ate our 100 inch screen.
