802.3 Ethernet Cabling

2024-05-04 05:28:19

I was putting audio within a mini storage in the hallways and the only cabling I had available from the office was ethernet. Thankfully I had seen Dante talked about in a console mixing setting that you can move audio within your network with POE Switches and ethernet. It was easy to get it working with 2 of these. To get the 3rd one I had to reach out to support which I merely needed to open the setting for the audio source and create a Multicast Flow for it, which made the whole setup work.

Ethernet cables are ethernet cables, but these are fine!

It's a case. Plenty of cabling options.

I own 8 of these - my primary way to transport cabling and smaller lights.

This 802.3af PoE to USB adapter is another great product from UniFi. It really has two great uses in my opinion: it cleans up your IT rack or desk for all those little IoT devices that have to be USB powered and it gives you the ability to restart the connected device remotely (when on a UniFi PoE switch and using the UniFi Network app or web interface). These two advantages make it worth it. I'm constantly trying to make more of my equipment PoE powered because it is way more convenient and it allows me to free up another plug from one of those USB wall bricks...always a win in my book. I have several of these, some of which are several years old and I've never had a problem. For a future revision I would love to see a version that passes the Ethernet data to a port as well so you could use that too, but ultimately not a big deal.

I used this little switch to extend ethernet and POE to a separate location where I could not add another cable. I also wanted to eliminate a couple of POE injectors and instead power back from my main network switch. Works great for me. I used Ubiquity Pro Switch 24 sourcing power over Ethernet which provides IEE 802.3bt PoE++ to the Flex RJ45 input switch. The switch immediately powered up, and began distributing power itself to the output ports which are IEE 802.3at PoE+ RJ45. I use it to power a Ubiquity WIFI access point as well as a Hikvision security camera. Be sure to check that the power specs match the devices you are wanting to power as all POE is not created equal. Included components to mount to a pole, or to place on a shelf. RJ45 connectors had a splash shield if used to mount outside. Case is pure silky white and fits in the palm of my hand. Pretty amazing for all the features it includes. The only downside I have its connecting and disconnecting RJ45 connectors is more difficult than normal due to the splash shield, but for me, this is a 1 time activity. Nice feature if outdoors

I have some older Ubiquiti devices that don't support 802.3af. This lets me power those devices from my newer switches.
