Actors Working In A Recording Studio

I bought this for mid-side field recording, but it's proved useful in other applications. I was working on a radio drama, and most of the scenes had two actors talking to each other. It was a really convenient, lightweight solution for recording two actors speaking while facing one another. The two separate shockmounts included were also a plus. A really solid, albeit specialized microphone. You get what you pay for.

Working in a recording studio I am critical by need and these filled my expectations and more.

I have used the F8n for years to record plays and concerts. It is always challenging to get both the quiet (un-mic'd actors speaking) and loud (music/group singing) at the right levels. I had solved this by using the dual-channel recording feature of the F8n, which lets you take one input and record it at two different levels. So I would calibrate one for voices, and the other for loud music, then switch between them in my editing. I just got the F8n Pro, and oops; the dual-channel recording feature is gone. This makes no sense to me, as it was a very useful feature. Apparently they felt that it is unnecessary now that this unit supports 32-bit float WAV files. The marketing literature says that you basically don't need to worry about levels with this recording format. I was quite skeptical, because that makes no sense to me. So I tested it at home, and it seemed to work. I would yell very loudly into the mic with the recording level way up, and it was totally blown out, all red on the meter. I loaded it into my editor, and it's all blown out. Then I would lower the volume, and... Wow, it sounds great. So I took the plunge and recorded my most recent play with this. I set the levels appropriate to catch the un-mic'd actors, which means that the group singing would be blown out. And it was. But then in the editor, some simple volume adjustments recovered everything, and it sounded fantastic. Highly recommended.

For a while I used the Blue Snowball as a simple and quick method of taking my source audio straight into the editing software I own via USB. However when I upgraded to Win7, my Snowball stopped working so I needed a replacement. The Yeti is what I went with and I am very happy that I did. Like the Snowball it has multiple capsules and pickup patterns but at the same time the Yeti can do so much more and it sounds amazing. I love the stereo recording function and it is true stereo, and the fact that it has been certified by the pros at THX is even sweeter. When I bought this I originally planned to use it here and there for quick analog to digital straight into my editor, however now, after using it for a while, it will become one of my primary studio recording mics. Only downside if you want to call it a downside is the fact that it is BIG. The photos and such make it look smaller than it really is and despite the fact that the dimensions are listed on BHphoto still doesn't prepare you for how big of a microphone it is. Due to the fact of its size this is primarily a studio mic. That aside I can't get enough of this mic. I have been working as a production mixer and sound designer for 6 years now and I can say that this is an exceptional microphone.

Using it in our 'home studio' for prosumer-level performance video recording. Working great. Sound level top notch, lightweight, easy to assemble/disassemble. Definitely just right for this level of work.

Sony Digi Betacam is the only tape I trust to record the TV show Inside The Actors Studio as seen on Bravo TV

These are great for moving cameras around within the studio; and also for getting those motion shots when on screen actors are having a walking conversation.

A must have for on site and in studio video recording.
