I do wish Sony had designed their RX100 cameras with more of a useful grip. So this accessory is an automatic must-have for me. Be sure to follow the instructions in mounting - the adhesive is quite strong.

When you think you are unsure about what to buy for the first time, this is the speed of film to purchase. Manual or automatic cameras the images will be consistent.

I am currently using this lens with a NEX-5N; on this APS-C camera the lens has an equivalent 35mm focal length of 127.5mm. It can also be used on a full frame E-mount camera; mounting this lens on the A7 series for video is a popular use of it, and one I hope to test in the future. I use it both for video and for portraits. The lens feels solid. Focusing and aperture control are both smooth. The aperture control is clickless for video use, but the lens also works well for still photography. This is a completely manual lens with no electronic connections. You must set the aperture on the lens; the camera is unable to control it, so automatic modes that require aperture control will not work. You can still use automatic shutter speed, and auto ISO on some cameras. You also lose the automatic correction for lens distortion that the Sony cameras have for their own lenses, but that is not a major problem as the distortion levels of this lens are low. Wide open the lens produces lovely round bokeh, as the iris is completely retracted. Stopped down the shape of the 8 blade iris can be seen; still decent, but not as nice as more expensive cine lenses that use more blades. Sharpness is good wide open and improves somewhat stopped down to T4. Depth of field is very limited at T1.5 as you would expect, so careful focusing is essential. No, this lens isn't going to match the image quality of a Zeiss cine lens. But it also doesn't cost thousands of dollars. It delivers the good qualities of a fast 85mm lens - shallow depth of field, good bokeh, and low light capability - at a price that makes it possible for many more people to own.
