I am a professional videographer and I bought this camera as a present for my wife who wanted to learn photography. It is 14mp, fully auto or fully manual operations. Great zoom lens. I ended up using to shoot the cover photo for our local phone book and pictures included in the Yosemite Visitors Guide. Looks as good as a $2,000 camera if you know what you're doing. My wife is learning.

I am a user who would love to learn more about photography but felt intimidated by the idea of a professional level camera and this review is clearly meant for others like me. We recently bought a D5000 body with a 18-105 mm lens. We have had it now about a month and took it with us to Argentina. It took equally fantastic pictures in both urban Buenos Aires and rugged Patagonia and was light enough to haul for 8-12 hours in both locales, including a full-day glacier hike in crampons. We felt that it provided a lot of versatility without having to switch lens or being too unwieldy. With a Domke insert shoved in my purse/backpack/or messenger bag and a UV lens to prevent having to fiddle with a lens cap, we had it out and ready to go at all times without ever feeling too conspicuous.

It is a great starter camera for anyone who wants to learn photography. It can do almost everything the big expensive cameras can do.
