It's not the biggest or most powerful subwoofer, and might not fill a large room for home theater, but for clean, uncolored sound, say for jazz or classical, it's hard to beat. This sub has a solid pedal low C (think the Saint-Sans Third Symphony or certain passages from Holst's The Planets) and for intimate listening to jazz it will give you rock-solid (no pun intended) bass without overpowering the music. Pairs beautifully with other Audioengine products; a pair of self-powered speakers plus the S8, and a passive preamp for a volume control, gives you a super-clean small system at a fraction of the cost of a big component setup, and no compromise in sound quality. If accurate timbre and fidelity are your goals, this is an excellent choice. And for the icing on the cake, it's beautifully hand-finished in glossy white or black. 5 |
