Budget Studio Headphones Filmmaking

Let's start by saying these headphones are amazingly comfortable. As soon as you put them on, you feel the foam adjust to your head and it sounds like your in a studio. The audio quality...Just wow. I can't get the speakers to clip or even distort. Music and sounds that used to make audio fuzzy and distorted now come in crystal clear. These headphones make even 44.1k audio sound like a beast. Construction...no complaints. You are wearing these for the audio, not the fashion. It is indeed plastic and not the thickest or strongest, so don't expect them to take the abuse some people put headphones through when they travel. Finally, the overall wow factor. You just don't need to spend more on headphones than these right here. I have used headphones from the $10 budget to the $700 budget and these are all you need. If you want the alloy coating and steel construction, then sure. Spend more. But if you plan to keep your headphones in a studio or somewhere else safe, these will make your setup feel perfect. 5 |

This boom pole is a great price for what you get. I'm using it for shorts/low budget filmmaking. The boom adjusts from 3.1' to 8.1' which gives you quite a bit of room between your subjects and the boom operator. Nice build quality. Make sure you buy a mic clip or shock mount to hold your microphone. 5 |

This camera is absolutely wonderful through and through! It can pretty much handle just about anything you might through at in terms of low budget filmmaking! The 10bit color and rolling shutter fixes are by far the greatest features/upgrades from the A7s II in my opinion. 5 |

May it be on location photography or small-budget filmmaking, this bag is always by my side. I throw everything I own in it (lenses, filters, camera bodies, rolls of tape, film rolls). The size is perfect, I even get to sneak my 13 laptop in the front pocket. I love this bag. 5 |

This lens is perfect for budget narrative filmmaking covering the common focal lengths you'll need 95% of the time. Build quality is impressive. Iris, zoom, focus are smooth. Some edge softness, but minimal breathing and very good parfocal performance. Mated with my JVC LS300, this is an incredible value and unbeatable combination. I use this for low (and no) budget filmmaking, and the head is very smooth. I love the head and the mid-level spreader. The only problem I have with it is the legs. The latch to adjust the tripod legs is not ideal. I haven't had the product long, so I have no idea how long they will last, but I could see the latches losing proper functionality over time. I'd prefer an easier to use, more solid feeling turn-knob like the one's some Libec tripod's use, but you can't win them all. It was a good price, but I'd consider buying the head and legs separate if this is important to you. All in all, I think it's a great product for the price. 5 |

As an indie filmmaker producing low and no-budget films for the festival circuit for over 15 years now, I've spent a lot of time and money trying to kit out a budget indie filmmaking rig that could give me something approaching genuinely professional results. After putting an S1H though its paces for several weeks now, I believe this is to be at last a solved problem. The images this camera produces are simply stellar, even thrilling: low light performance is excellent and even the noise looks good, colors are gorgeous (shooting V-LOG and using the fantastic Varicam LUTs gives you an instant starting point for advanced grading), the camera body is well thought-out and rock solid, the menu system a breeze, the codecs numerous are flexible enough to handle just about any production situation, hard realities like rolling shutter are easily managed with a competent DP and a little bit of planning. It's so liberating to have OIS, a full frame censor, comprehensive anamorphic support, and a genuinely cinematic color palette to work with while maintaining essentially all of what made the GH5-S so productive and powerful as a filmmaking tool. You're still going to need everything else if you want to make great cinema: pro glass, skilled cinematography, excellent script, direction, cast, lighting, sound, production design and all the rest. Making a good movie is one of the hardest artistic challenges a person can set for themselves. The camera, however, is now a solved problem. If you can't make great cinema with the S1H, the problem isn't the camera. 5 |
