I make documentaries exclusively, mostly handheld, and I've been waiting a long time for an affordable 10 bit 422 state-of-the-art cinema style 4K camera that meets contemporary broadcast standards - and the EVA1 is it. With an EVF (I use a Gratical X) and grip extension, the camera is light and comfortable to use for hours on end. And the resulting pictures are stunning, the color you'd expect from Panasonic. There are numerous User buttons on both the body and grip, similar to the Canon C cameras, so everything is fast and intuitive. And I love the six 1/4-20 holes on the top that allow mounting accessories without needing to add a cheese plate. My only gripe is the difficulty to change ISO from the native settings of 800 and 2,500. Doing that requires diving into the menu and making changes that need to be changed back afterwards. It would have been nice if that operation was possible with the User dial, or the iris dial on the grip (as with the Canon). But the camera is so perfect otherwise I'm still giving it 5 stars.

Having been a Canon photographer for years, I was not suprised when I opened the box and began reading the manual. This little powerhouse delivers digital SLR level amenities in a handheld package. From full manual settings to very intuitive auto programs, it seems to cover the full range of photographer needs. The flash is more than adequate for this level of camera. The IS really works! I love that this camera can get down to the sub-4.0f range. This happens in no small part because of the oversized lens opening, which is unique for a handheld of this size. My only wish is that the HD video might produce a slightly larger output, but if I really need that, I'll go to an HD Camcorder. Shutter recovery is fast and it's ready to shoot again quickly. All in all, very happy with this new powerhouse from Canon.

I came from the era of the Canon XL1. Remember that camera? If not, look up a picture. A lot was said about that funky fold-out chest pad, but I loved it. It was a thoughtful, ergonomic solution for a camera that could be used handheld, but didn't have enough back-weight to justify a full pad balanced on your shoulder. I don't know why more prosumer or compact cinema cameras didn't implement a similar solution. Anyway, the LanParte Chest Pad... it's awesome. I own two of them. I have a very compact Canon R5C setup and I like to shoot handheld, but I don't like to do the mid-body baby-tuck hold. I'm also not stable enough to just hold the rig by the camera grip and an added left-side handle. This allows me to have the magic 3 points of contact for more stable handheld shooting. It does put a little more weigh forward of your body, so you have to allow for that and rest when possible... keep that in mind. Also, since I like to keep the rig as close to my body as possible, I replaced the included 8 aluminum rod with a 6 carbon fiber rod to move it closer in, and help a little with weight. This is not a replacement for a shoulder pad setup, it is an alternative setup for handheld work. Know what you're getting this pad for, and I think you'll like it. Highly recommended.

This was the first handheld meter I ever used. I borrowed it from my friend's father along with his Hasselblad camera. Here, years later, I am a working photojournalist and I went and bought the meter that I used when I first fell in love with photography. I am a strong believer in handheld meters. I use them for my old unmetered cameras, as well when shooting new digital cameras. I own this meter (L-398A), along with the L-208, and L-358. I love how this meter doesn't need batteries to operate, came with a really carrying/belt case, and that it came perfectly calibrated (within 1/3 stop on some tests I did). For beginners, I would recommend the L-208, it's cheaper, smaller, and I think easier to read. The L-398A can do more, and is a more robust meter, but for casual use, and with film the L-208 is plenty capable. If you are planning on shooting with flash and strobe, this meter won't help. Likewise, if you are mainly shooting in really low light, a digital meter might better serve your needs. However, this is THE METER I grab when shooting my old Nikon F2s and my Leica cameras. One note: this meter used to be made in Japan, but the current model is made in the Philippines. Qualitywise, I don't think there is really a difference but just something I noticed when looking at the back of the meter.

Great for going from tripod to handheld shooting and back again. I use it with both my Canon G12 and 7DII.
