Canon Ixus 177 Digital Camera Review

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] The Canon Zoom Digital Monocular is so much better than expected. First, I love the small size of the camera. You can slip it into your pocket and take it anywhere. It is so lovely being able to take pictures of just about anything. Do you see something you like far away? It is not a problem with this camera. It has such an incredible zoom capability. You can take close-up pictures of sports games and nature or use it as an everyday traveling camera. It also takes video. I appreciate the Bluetooth connection to your phone. It makes image transfer so easy. With the invention of cameras on smartphones, I never thought I would want to carry a camera again, but now that I have this camera, I have completely changed my mind. My phone’s camera does not even compare to this one. It is in a whole other league. 5 |

I chose the Para 177 as the biggest Para I could comfortably maneuver in my studio. Easy crank open set-up and take-down makes this large Para manageable in studio or on location. It's big enough to stand in front of while shooting and get beautiful light fall-off around the edges of the subjects with no fill reflector required. I often add a hair light but that's it - perfect lighting. Coming from Parabolix I noticed the absence of a hot spot in the center with the Para 177 in the defocused (fully extended) position. See the Para 133 Reflector Kit review by Oleg here at B&H to see a photo comparison of the Parabolix vs the Broncolor catch lights. I am also using Profoto Pro light head with excellent results. Machining, fit, and finish of the Para 177 are exceptional. As with all Broncolor Para's, the unique light quality and the versatility of going from a focused more specular light to a soft even defocused ring light effect is outstanding. 5 |

I only have a pair of much larger Maxoak 177 Wh V-mount batteries to compare these to. I don't know how this brand compares for more expensive V-mount batteries, but for the special sale price I bought them for, I'm quite happy. Obviously, the IDX 96Wh won't hold power as long as the bulkier Maxoak batteries, but they have the advantage of much less weight and approved for air travel. They have 2 D-Tap power ports (one of which can be used for charging), and a USB power port. Time will tell how well they hold up, but their build quality seems fine. The charger is mostly plastic, and will probably hold up well if I don't drop it. I put off investing in V-mount batteries for longer than I should have. Its an expensive initial investment, but is a more convenient and time saving option on set. 5 |

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I received the Canon digital monocular a few days ago and it is really cool. The notice is very clear and the menus are very intuitive. It may take a bit of time to master the buttons functionality and where they are when looking in the monocular but you will get used to it. The monocular is great when you are kind of far from the action. We used it for our daughter's dance show, without it, it was difficult to clearly see her but with the monocular no problem. I really like the fact that we can take pictures and movies with the memory card included in the package. I was also very surprised by the picture and video quality The zoom function is very simple. There are only 3 modes but it turns out they are well chosen. I can also tell that the monocular does not leave me when I am going out, there are always some things to spot... 5 |
