I consider this an essential piece of equipment so you can charge a spare battery while using the camera to continue taking pictures. Otherwise, you have to connect the AC power supply to the camera to charge the battery. That prevents you from using the camera. The Sony DSC-HX100V digital still camera comes with one battery and a camera power supply which will power the camera and charge an installed battery. But if you want to have one or more spare batteries (which is always a good idea) then it's ideal to have a way to charge it without tying down the camera. Coast’s lithium battery ZX450 all batteries that Coast supply are excellent. Reason I say this is because rechargeable lithium batteries sometimes have issues like premature failure. Things like not taking a charge, memory issues, and short run times to name a few. I do handle lion cells as recommended which is important for long life. Coast batteries and my lithium cellular batteries are the only batteries that work as promised regarding rechargeable lithium cells. I expect an a dramatic improvement with rechargeable lithium batteries of all sizes any time.

Sometimes I even forget the I have to charge this battery. It's an Info-Lithium Battery with 6600mAh at 7.2V and it have a very long life!
