Computer Monitor Calibration For Photography

I ordered this monitor on Saturday evening, Dec. 2, and received it in Bethesda, MD, early the following Monday morning. Well done, as usual, B&H Photo! I unpacked it and set it up, only to find that the proprietary BenQ Palette Master Ultimate software wouldn't recognize either the monitor or my colorimeter. You need the BenQ software to perform a hardware calibration. Other calibration software, even Calman's at $2000, will only perform a software calibration. I called BenQ tech support and was delighted to discover it's U.S.-based. I was not so delighted to have them tell me, however, that the problem with the software had arisen a few weeks ago, and they did not yet have a solution. The BenQ engineers thought a recent Windows update might have made changes that caused the problem. After a few calls, the BenQ tech support staff eventually escalated me to a BenQ technical support manager. She could not have been more diligent in working with me, and after a few days, she provided new drivers for my computer's USB serial computer. Miracle of miracles, that worked! But beware! It only worked when I attached the colorimeter to the side of the monitor via a USB-A port there and to the monitor to the computer via the BenQ-supplied USB-A to USB-B cable.  Palette Master Ultimate would not recognize the colorimeter if I used its native USB-C connection when connected to either the monitor or the computer. There were times early on when I thought I would have to pack up the monitor and send it back to B&H Photo, no small task because the monitor comes in an extraordinarily large box and its packaging is like a Rubik's cube. BenQ's tech support, however, did itself proud! The image quality of the monitor is outstanding, and with the software now working, I couldn't be happier with my purchase.

This monitor offers calibrated HDR with peak brightness up to 1600 nits in my measurements, well over the advertised 1000. The included colorimeter + hardware calibration offer great results (similar calibration of HDR via ICC profile is not yet possible, so this is a very important feature for an HDR monitor. And the stand is very nice. The key downside (as noted by others) is the quality of local dimming when viewing dark solid areas. The out of the box results are pretty bad, but you can substantially mitigate this by adjusting backlight settings (https://gregbenzphotography.com/review-best-hdr-monitor-for-photography/). The adjusted results do not fully eliminate the problem, but it is very slight and I think most people will be fine with it. You can also eliminate it in SDR mode by disabling dynamic dimming. If you print professionally or are the kind of person who's spend a couple grand on an SDR display, this probably isn't the monitor for you (the new PA32UCXR is definitely an upgrade to consider over this). But it's a great choice for a lot of people looking to get into HDR photography. I can't think of another monitor offering this much HDR headroom and accuracy at a similar price point.

I bought this particular monitor mostly for use with photography. It has very good gamut coverage, is well made and sports some very useful features. The tech reviews on Eizo monitors are very favorable and the customer reviews are extremely good. The image quality is outstanding. An attractive feature of this monitor is that it comes with a calibration device which is easy to use to keep the monitor in calibration. I also have an NEC monitor that is seven years old and is starting to bleed dark patches along the edges of the screen and has a warm cast to part of the screen to the point where I am no longer able to calibrate it, so I switched monitor brands. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

The headline says it all. It was easy to set up with my MacBook Pro computer. It is everything I need a monitor to be for my photography.

The monitor is excellent - color accuracy (Adobe RGB), uniformity, etc... probably the best manufacturer of monitors with hardware calibration (built-in LUT)... with second place to BenQ. I just wish hardware calibration monitors were less expensive (sad face)!
