I was first a bit skeptical, but after being out in the field and getting used to the endless possibilities of tilting and shifting the focus plane I can't do without it. Landscape and architecture get a new meaning, but also portraits/wedding can get that nice addition if you use the TS intelligently. Perfectly sharp (sharper than the corresponding prime, IMHO) the superiority is easily visible on my 5D mkii. Not having an auto focus (no, I am not complaining), I would suggest also to add a manual diaphragm control for quicker control.

I use this lens in landscape and product photography to control the location of the in focus plane across the field of view and the perspective of the image. The tilt feature of this lens enables me to control where the focus plane is in the image in order to put the entire field of view in focus or to isolate a subject/object from the rest of the frame. The lens does not increase the depth of field but allows the user to place the plane of focus where they need it to be. The shift movement of the lens shifts the location of the lens's imaging circle relative to the cameras sensor. This means that the lens's center of perspective and the image's center of perspective are no longer the same and is as if you were only using a crop from the side of a correspondingly wider angle lens. This feature allows me to control the perspective of the image so buildings or trees are not leaning away from me in an image. In addition I can capture a series of three images left, center and right by just shifting the lens and then combining them in photoshop to get the equivalent of a 60% increase in image size captured. Optically this lens is the sharpest of the 9 L lenses that I use and that is saying a lot. There is a learning curve involved until you get used to the tilt and shift functions of the lens and when and how to use them in conjunction or independently. The lens is also manual focus but you have to give some things up to get the functionality of the tilt shift movements. And finally, if you look at the rear lens element it is supposed to be open around the element (there is a 1-2mm gap around the floating element that you can see the inner gears and electronics). I was initially concerned that it was not sealed by some gasket or rear piece but after talking with canon they said it was indeed designed that way.

I recently purchased the iOptron SkyGuider astral tracker and really wasnt sure if Id need this or not...so I bought it just in case.  Im so glad I did.  Not only is some kind of camera mount a must-have with that tracker mount, but this ball head really rocks.  Ive always been leery of ball head mounts, considering them way less rugged than the old school three-plane mount Ive used for years... I couldnt believe it, but this compact ball head mount kept my full frame nikon body and a nikon 200-500MM zoom lens rock steady for 3+ hours on an astral tracker mount.  Im talking a camera/lens combo that weighs just about 10 lbs!     If you need a very compact, very robust mount...just get this one.  You wont be sorry!

This thing is so heavy, and sturdy and free from vibrations, that you can shoot astral photography with an 85mm lens on a 35mm body and crop in to your heart's content. I've you haven't tried doing this with your current tripod, you probably won't fully appreciate the anecdote above.

The Impact ControlSync Receiver works great connected to an Impact Astral Extreme Monolight. The instructions were clear, I just connected the unit to the monolight’s USB and was up and running in a few minutes. It is very easy to use. Also the range is good enough to control a monolight from any location in a 40’ x 40’ studio. I’m very pleased with the unit when paired with Impact ControlSync Transmitter.

The Impact ControlSync Transmitter works great for controlling a Impact Astral Extreme Monolight placed high on a 10' boom. Previously with another monolight setup, which didn't have a remote controller, I needed to manually set the power by climbing a ladder to reach the monolight's control settings. This is so much easier and more accurate! I wish I had one of these years ago.

I have been using Elgato products since the Game Capture HD with a 2009 iMac. I used to light up my elgato green screen with a cheap USB powered LED work light set on the floor. It managed for the most part, but far from an ideal solution. The jump to the Key Light was like night and day, literally. Having full control over colour temperature and brightness made my lighting look instantly professional. Being able to control every option via the iOS app over WiFi meant the Key Light became the main source of lighting in my tiny apartment, and still is.

I recently bought one of these to bring my work to the next level and I'm quite impressed. Having full control of my audio is a game changer. The mics pick up range is really impressive compared to the VideoPro mic I have been using. Highly recommend this addition to your tool belt.
