D Vitec Professional Financial Camera Software

I am digitizing decades of old financial records and got tired of a minute per sheet on my flatbed scanner. I can put a stack of papers in the R40 feed tray and tear through them two-sided in no time, it's breathtaking compared to flatbed scanning. The software lets you set up different scanning profiles (one-sided vs two-sided, different resolutions) which are then available with a single click. The only issue I have had so far is if a page has printing close to the edge it sometimes gets cut off. There is likely a fix for this but I haven't dug into the docs yet to research it as it rarely happens. Also I previously purchased the Readiris Pro software and haven't figured out how to interface it with this scanner but the included software does most of the same stuff (OCR is my main concern) so I am good for now. Given the scope of my scanning needs this device will save me hundreds if not thousands of hours of time over using a flatbed scanner.

Several years ago, I was concerned how The Vitec Group's acquisition of the Anton Bauer brand would impact the quality of their products, but I am quite impressed with the build quality of these redesigned Gold Mount units. Very lightweight but solidly constructed. Best of all, my Quad charger still works with the new batteries (as long as I upgrade the firmware chip).

) Vitec now owns both Gitzo and Manfrotto. Many of the best characteristics of Gitzo are incorporated into Manfrotto. I called Vitec technical support, and was told that this tripod/head combination would meet my intended needs, provided I used the Arca-Swiss (AS) type clamp modification kit (Manfrotto Top Lock Travel Quick Release Adapter). Installing this AS clamp, I have tested the unit with a gripped Nikon D850, Sigma 150-600 Sport with a Wimberley foot. The camera balanced well, no wobble at standing height extension, and the ball was (almost) as smooth as my AS B1. I then installed a Wimberlely Side Kick gimbal adapter into the Manfrotto AS clamp, and again it worked well -- no wobble. The Gitzo style leg locks worked well, no slippage (note that this is new, and thus I cannot comment on how the bushings will wear). Several comments. The feet (Manfrotto R112171) are proprietary and rectangular at ground contact, requiring spares now; the 3/8 side threaded mounting hole has a cap that probably will crack at the hinge (Manfrotto R103932). Also, the allen flat head mounting screw for the AS clamp is black coated and not stainless steel. I suspect much of the non-stainless steel hardware will corrode in field (outdoor) use. The center column can be mounted parallel to the ground and the legs will splay, both to allow low height (macro) work. If the unit proves durable (to be determined), this appears to be a superior travel tripod/head unit.

Everything I wanted in a tripod. And the added bonus of a family run business. The weight is good, operationally solid, with nice, simple added features like backlit level, quick-closing strap thing. Two things - one, the manual is lacking especially regarding spreader operation. Two, the spreader mechanisms feel like they might not stand up to work over time. But 5 year warranty. Easy to compare to (Vitec) Sachtler and come out on top. Flow tech is on everyone's list but it's 3-4x the cost. And, being a little sentiment, I prefer family run cartoni over conglomerate Vitec (sachtler)

I have had two other scanners in the past but the Epson Perfection V850 is probably the best professional flatbed scanner by far and along with ICE software that comes with it.

This is my media for monthly backup of financial data. A simple drag and drop using Ubuntu---slick and trouble free. I would prefer it supported empty the trash with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, but I typically overwrite files anyway so I don't think it will be a problem. Fast delivery and arrived in excellent condition---I'm pleased. The proprietary cable is a slight bummer if it ever gets chewed by my dog or lost in a move.

Awesome scanner. Software has steep learning curve but is just as awesome. Professional results. 5 stars. None better
