External Hard Disk Speed Test Mac

I just added the WD 4TB Elements External Desktop Hard Disk Drive to my� back up solution (6 hard drives) and Windows 10.� I disconnected the power and USB cable from a full WD hard drive and replaced it with this new drive and fired it up. It works great, just like I would expect from Western Digital.

This is my favorite external disk now!

I wanted to reduce the number of files on my Mac and moved all my pictures and edits to the external hard drive. Even though the disk comes formatted for Mac or PC I would make sure you reformat the disk before use. The speed is great and have had no issues.

This is my third Mac mini computer of all time using Mac OS. There is more than enough power for my needs. Connected an external disk and the entire media library is stored there. Put 32GB of RAM.

I tested these cards with Blackmagic Disk Speed test and they reached 600 MB/s, but that may have been a bottleneck in my computer or card reader (also ProGrade). Nonetheless, these cards work great in my Sony Alpha 1 and allow me to use all video modes and codecs. The stills buffer clears way faster than SD UHS-II cards as well. These cards are still pricey but at least they're undercutting the Sony CFA cards.

I cannot speak to disk speed because I use it only for external backup in a drive sled. I have 3 external mirrors which I keep offline except when mirroring. This is due to having lost 2 external backups within 4 days of each other so now I have 3 and stagger when they are online.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This 4TB drive is compact and just want I needed to back up my old Mac. I plugged it into my new PowerBook, opened disk utility, and had it formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in about a minute. Since I have an old 2011 iMac, I needed to use the older file system. I also ran some speed tests with BMD disk speed test and it did well for a none-SSD (see attached photo). If you need an easy-to-use and portable drive, It is hard to beat WD.

Great disk for the price, Mac anyways doesn't support 2x2, so it has the perfect top speed for Mac devices. It's very small, cable is long enough so the disk can lie on the table when laptop is places on the stand. Most importantly it runs way cooler than SanDisk which gives an additional peace of mind.

This is a great value-- 5TB will give me the room I need to back up files and archive. This is not the fastest drive but I wasn't looking for speed-- just cheap storage. I was also looking for reliability. This is a good brand. Compact, rugged, and highly visible. Compatible with MAC or Windows. Make sure you use a dedicated cable-- USB C to USB C or USB C to USB A-- no adapters. I tried a USB A adapter on a USB C cable and my IMAC did not see the drive-- not even in disk utility. A regular USB C to USB A cable did the trick. It did not mount directly-- I still had to go in to disk utility but there it was. It comes formatted in EX-FAT but I reformatted easily in to MAC Journal Extended. I was up and running in minutes. I also plugged it in to a Windows 10 laptop before the reformat, and it saw the drive right off. A great purchase and I'm happy with the drive. It's no speed demon, but that's not why I picked it up.
