Everyone knows about the famous Canon nifty fifty 50mm f/1.8 lens family: an absurdly cheap prime lens with great performance that every Canon shooter should buy to supplement the kit lens. After two days of shooting with this lens, I firmly believe that this is the perfect second lens for cheaply but very effectively enhancing the capabilities of your MFT camera. The only compromise Olympus made is the lack of image stabilization. I have a Panasonic G7 with the 14-42mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens and the obvious natural pairing is a Panasonic 45-150mm with in-lens stabilization lens that sells around the $300 range. I don't like to over-spend on equipment and I'm often on a tight budget, so I decided to give this lens a try instead of saving for a couple of months to buy the Panasonic lens that's almost three times the price. It's plastic. Some dislike plastic lenses but I like it; it's a lot lighter. It's the same size as the 14-42mm lens with hood attached, so it fits well in my holster bag. It's very easy to use; the zoom control is smooth and the manual focus ring is sensitive and smooth. Shooting handheld at the maximum 150mm with arms outstretched can easily result in blurry images due to the lack of stabilization; for this reason, I was disappointed at first since my test photos weren't clear. Pulling my elbows to my sides or otherwise holding the camera differently to reduce arm and hand shake made a big difference in quality. This lens seems sharpest when you close the aperture to f/8 or smaller. With a little practice, I was able to take good photos with a reasonable amount of pixel-level detail even in poor conditions. Bottom line: if you need a long telephoto lens for your MFT body, can live without in-lens stabilization, and/or you're on a tight budget, you can't go wrong with this lens. 5 |

Used primarily to capture inspirations for my wife's painting. The 14x zoom and 14 megapixels for both major selling points. 5 |

This camera allows me to use my vintage cameras with image stabilization. I am also impressed with the performance of my E series lens.. The feature set is far superior to the make of camera I have been using since 1986. 5 |

Before you spend more you might want to try out this lens. I spent more...WAY more...for Zeiss glass and L series lenses and my Olympus Pro series 12-40mm lens. While they're all good...so is this lens. Don't let the low price fool you. This lens is well made and I'm completely satisfied with the pictures it provides. Yes, it's a manual focus only lens...but I like that. I use it with my Olympus OM-D E-M1 mirrorless camera. That camera has in-body image stabilization and the ability to zoom in to make it easy to get perfect focus every time. The image stabilization makes me forget I'm 73 years old and sometimes a bit shaky. To top it all off this silver lens looks great on my silver bodied E-M1 (shown with lens, a cheap generic lens hood, and an RRS L plate). 5 |
