Gateway Computer Boot From Usb

Just what I needed in order to boot up my computer with a different operating system!

I bought to add USB 3.0 to my old Gateway LX6810-01 which I bought new in 2009 and still use as a primary machine. It is stock except for an upgraded Corsair 750W power supply and Sandisk 1 TB SSD. That leaves it with an available PCI slot, which this card fit. However, the case interfered ever so slightly with the USB ports but with some persistence, I was able to plug a USB cable into each port. Also, I received Error Code 31 in Device Manager which meant the drivers were loaded but due to the enabled Windows 10 Fast Startup, it took me some time and internet searching to find out I just needed to perform a restart to make it work. That did the trick. It otherwise works beautifully and I was able to take full advantage of the new 802.11ax standard with a just-released USB Wi-Fi 6 adapter and my ISP's Wi-Fi 6 gateway.

So far so good. It does take a few minutes to boot up and attach to the computer. Other than that seems to be spinning away.

I was surprised at the fast boot up speed of my computer's operating system that I bought another one to replace the hard drive in my other computer. Before you spend the money to update your CPU for faster speed, try one of these.

The boot drive on my computer uses one of these drives and has been working correctly for several years. I purchased this drive as a back up in case the primary fails. I cloned my boot drive to my recent purchase with no difficulty. If the boot drive fails, or if there is an unfortunate scam attack, I can recover by simply replacing the primary boot drive with the recent back up.

I work in the semiconductor industry, therefore I was aware of 3D NAND. When I saw that Samsung had V-NAND SSDs available, I decided to try the 850 PRO 512GB SSD. I installed it in a 6 year old computer. I did a clean Win 7 install. After the first boot up, I was stunned. This computer used to take 4 - 5 minutes to fully cold boot. Now it only takes 45 - 55 seconds. from a cold boot. Apps now open virtually immediately. This V-NAND SSD has breathed new life into a 6 year old computer. It is faster than my 1 1/2 year old Win 7 computer with a faster processor. Both computers have Core i7 processors . Both have Win 7. I had a computer with an SSD several years ago. It was fast, but nothing like what I am experiencing with the 32 level V-NAND SSD from Samsung.
