Good External Drive For Mac

This drive provides compact external storage for my Mac. I have three of them--two copies of files that I don't keep on my computer, and one for Time Machine. The oldest one I have is now two years old and hasn't skipped a beat, so I am happy with their reliability. These drives are a good value and provide the additional storage that I need. Transfer speeds are good, though I wouldn't edit video from them or anything like that. 5 |

Good drive, but if you are a Mac user, be sure to reformat the Drive to MAC OS Journaled. It used to be the case that ExFat was okay if you needed to share a drive between a Mac and a PC user. But with the newer OS updates, my ExFat drives no longer read the data in Final Cut Pro X. What a hassle! I have to buy another one of these just to use it as a transfer tool so I can re-format my ExFat drives. That takes a lot of time and money. Hope that helps someone out there NOT to make the mistake I made. 5 |

I use windows 8.1 quite often. On this mac, all drives (except the internal flash drive) are external. Windows runs great off Thunderbolt connected drives. You can have multiple window drives and select the one you want on boot by holding down the option key. 5 |

I decided on using Western Digital My Passport Ultra for Mac 2 TB as exclusive external hard drive for Time Machine on my iMac. I have also used WD My Passport for Mac 2 TB as exclusive for my MacBook Pro. Both were easy to install simply by Google search for instructions How to install Time Machine on external drive. No instructions come in the package box. Both are working automatically. I'm happy with each! 5 |
