I think most photographers know what pinhole photography is, but how many have actually tried it? I've looked at wooden 4X5 pinhole cameras. I was never that interested. I understood the theory. It just seemed like too much trouble. Now comes the Thingyfy Pinhole Pro X with a variety of mounts. So I bought one to use on my Canon EOS 5D MKIV. The price was moderate and I thought why not? The device is very well made. Quite solid. The ability to vary the focal length is useful. Now for the experiment. Pinhole images will not be very sharp. The depth of field is, for all intents and purposes unlimited. This is good and bad (see below). Exposure times at reasonable ISO's will be longer than film or digital. Composition will require care. You will be able to see little of nothing through the view finder. I use the live view feature of the Canon to visualize shots. Your subject's shape and contours will be more important than sharpness. A strong foreground will be important in many shots. Sharpness is something we have been taught is good. The more pixels the better. Focus and depth of field are critical. But what if you throw all that out? What if nothing is sharp? What if depth of field is not controlled by aperture and objects in the background are as sharp (relatively) as the foreground? Welcome to the world of pinhole photography. How do you make images where everything you know is wrong? Where there is no focus and the aperture is fixed at ƒ256? It is a challenge. In a short review I cannot give you a tutorial on pinhole photography. That you must discover for yourself. However, I can tell you that you will enter a world where a whole new form of creativity awaits you. Attached is a test shot.

Using a 4x5 pinhole camera (f/231 before filtration) with a Hoya R72 gives my scenic views plenty of time to "average out" any moving distractions ...like an hour or two... and produces creamy, dreamy leafy trees and sunlit grasses. I've tried panchromatic Arista.edu with the IR filter for 4 hours of bright sunlight which produced ZERO density. Rollei IR is THE scenic secret.
