The iRig Pre Microphone serves a rather specific purpose to connect XLR microphones into smartphone devices (with a TRRS connection). Using the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, this worked wonderfully, allowing me to use a hand-held (non-phantom) and head-mounted (phantom) microphone with the device. The controls are easy to understand (off, on, phantom) and there's volume knob to adjust the gain. When you hit the right levels, the sound comes through great and is a great way to get more professional sounding microphones into DIY/last minute recording setups. There is also a hack (which voids any warranties) to route sound exclusively through the headphone jack, enabling it's use with devices such as DSLRs, making it a very inexpensive way to get microphones connected to higher-end equipment if you only need one input.
