After years of waiting for an updated 300F4 or 80-400vr, I bought the AF 80-400 in 2009. Used right (at F8-F11) it performed OK. Bought the 300F4 AF-S and Nikon 1.4TC to get better IQ for birding. Still wanted more. When the AF-S 80-400 came out, the MTF scores and preliminary reviews convinced me to get one. I'm glad I did. Side-by-side testing on my D800e showed the new 80-400 to be slightly sharper than the 300F4 with TC at all apertures at 400mm. Contrast was clearly better. And better than the old 80-400 across the board. AF-S is a welcome change, and AF is quite fast. VR is much improved, but still not as good as high shutter speeds without VR. Still, it's at least mostly usable now. Tripod collar is ... going to be replaced, just like the other two lenses. IQ of the lens is good wide open, and pretty much only changes DOF to stop down. You just need to nail the focus and keep shutter speeds up to get excellent results. I've used it with a 1.4TC, and it's still pretty good IQ, even wide open. Used with a V1, it has extreme range and flexibility. 5 |

Bought from B&H new in Spring 2018. Still working in Summer 2020 without issue. Crossing my fingers, never had the issues others describe. Used with Maxoak V mount batteries. Never tried charging the batteries via this pinch as I believe manufacturer instructions said to charge via the battery's d-tap. Used with several monitors, GH5 and BMPCC4k. 5 |
