Excellent portrait lens. Some people prefer an 85mm, some people prefer a 135mm for portraits. 105mm has always been that middle ground for compression. The longer your lens, the greater the compression look (fatter their necks, flatter their noses get). 200mm lenses work great with skinny models (magazine look). 58mm lenses work well with fat guys (to slim). But 85mm, 105mm, and 135mm are classic portrait looks. The 105/1.4 is a little bit sharper than the 85/1.4 wide open, but generally has all the same characteristics. It does NOT focus quickly, but its accurate. The bokeh is a little bit nicer than average, but not perfect -- it produces a lot of cat's eye (lemon-shaped) bokeh with points of light, instead of perfect circles. This bothers a lot of people, but also renders a distinct look. The overall render from this lens is NOT as good as from the 200/2, and is (obviously) not a replacement for that lens by any measure. But it is very good, and less than half the cost, which means, paired with a D500 or DX body, it could in fact provide a kind of substitute. On a D810 or FX body, its an ideal portrait lens. But no VR, means you can struggle in the dark with shake. If you need VR, and your subjects generally hold still for you, then you should strongly consider the Tamron 85/1.8 VC or the Nikon 105/2.8 VR. If you don't need VR and don't want to spend a small fortune, then consider the Nikon 85/1.8 G -- many published magazines' photographers use that lens, and its really a great option. As for the Nikon 85/1.4 G -- its so similar to the 105/1.4 G that you'd be foolish to buy both. Additionally, if you have 135/2 DC or a 105/2 DC, you really won't be making a very big leap here. The 135/2 DC might be better for intimate portraits for the eyes, and you have to imagine that Nikon will make a new 135mm (maybe 1.8 or 1.4 or VR??) sometime sooner than later, since the 105/1.4 basically replaces the 105/2 DC. Either Nikon or Sigma/Tamron.
