This unit is an incredible value. ZFS for network storage with ECC memory is exactly what you want. It has a powerful processor that also has embedded graphics. The GPU pass through for VM's works with the current version of QUTS Hero. In case the outdated review saying PCI-E pass-though to virtualization station doesn't work was deterring you and making you look at the 12 bay model, that is no longer valid. It didn't work at launch, but QNAP resolved that. It has several expansion slots, 12x 3.5" bays, 4x 2.5" bays, and 2x NVMe slots, and a dual 10GB NIC out of the box. You can get a small form factor bracket for the NIC and move it to the expansion ports on the other side to free up the full size slot for a GPU or other full size expansion card. I like that the 32GB of RAM is only using 2x 16GB sticks, so you can double or triple your memory without wasting the expensive ECC memory that comes with it. I personally added a 64GB (2x 32GB) kit and have 96GB of ram with a dedicated GPU. It has a power connector included for more power consuming GPU's. It just makes more sense than the 12 bay. You get 4x extra HDD bays and double the RAM. When you go to expand your 12 bay or have to upgrade the RAM, you will realize you should have just bought the 16 bay. You will spend way more on storage than the NAS itself, so it's worth getting a good NAS. The new all flash desktop NAS QNAP recently came out with, the TH-S1290FX (all flash) is the only thing more powerful at the moment in desktop form at the time of writing this. They each have their own uses. The only real downside to this or any QNAP NAS is that they do not have the best support. Synology's support is better, but not great. Synology is also turning in to an "Apple" like anti consumer company, that is trying to force you to use only their hard drives and "official" components. 5 |

I have been wanting to get rid of my tower for ages. The one thing keeping me from being able to do so was the occasional need to use an external LTO-5 tape drive which has a SAS interface. Now that my latest laptop has a Thunderbolt 3 port, I rolled the dice and gave this expansion system a try. Amazingly it worked first try, no fighting with drivers, no issues at all. It took under 5 minutes to open the chassis, move the card from my tower to this unit, and then fire it up for a test drive. Windows 10 immediately recognized both the PCI SAS card and the attached LTO-5 Tape Drive. I ran the tape drive diagnostic program to make sure the interface could keep up with the speed requirements and all tests passed. One caution: I was using the piggy-backed USB-C port on the back of this expansion unit to drive a 4K DisplayPort adapter. While the tape drive was reading or writing I had some display flashing. I assume this is because of the bandwidth needed to run both 4K-60FPS plus the demand from the tape drive. The solution was as simple as removing the 4K monitor cable from this device. I don't have any problem running the laptop without the desktop monitor for the occasions when i need to operate the tape drive. 5 |
