Leica 50Mm Lens

I bought this filter to go on my 50mm Leica Lens. So far, it's great.

I just got a Leica M10 and I won't be able to afford a Leica made lens for a while. I shopped around and decided to try the 7Artisans 50mm 1.1. Big Mistake. The Lens was fine and the softness had its charm but it wasn't for me. I returned it and bought this Little Beauty. This was exactly what I was looking for. This Lens feels and works like a Leica lens. Super sharp, even wide open, with that micro-contrast we all love. One day I hope to own a Leica lens but until then, this lens won't leave my M10. The pictures I am posting were taken within an hour of acquiring the Lens.

I am using the Panasonic Lumix S 50mm f/1.8 Lens along with my Leica M lenses on the Leica SL2s camera and I am very impressed with the quality of the images this lens produces even when used wide open at f1.8! The auto focus is quick and precise and is a great match to the SL2s body in terms of weight and feel. This is an outstanding lens at a very reasonable price and a great entry point for a dedicated lens to use with the Leica SL2 system.

I recently bought a used copy of the 50mm f/2 Planar ZM for my Leica M10. This lens really showed me more of what the camera is capable of. The sharpness really became apparent when I took some landscapes of some interesting weather. If you're like me and shoot mainly 50mm, the Planar is a great, high-resolution choice. B&H got the lens to me in the original packaging. Rangefinder focus calibration is spot on and the focus ring nub works great. The Planar is a performer.

With f 0.95, f1.4, f2 and f2.5 50mm's in the Leica line, each of us has to decide where dreams meet budget. It's a wonderful lens, easy to use with the rangefinder system, and the M9 viewinder lets you see roughly double the actual frame, which is a joy for quick composition. The lens is also a solid chunk of glass--you do not want to drop it on your foot. It does, however, require a little bit of good judgement--I love the narrow depth of field with the lens wide open. The reality of my shooting is that only a fraction of my shots really need--or profit from--the full f1.4 aperature. At mid-range focusing distances, the lens still delivers very nice separation and background blur when stopped down to f5.6--f8. In open-sky situations, a screw-in circular polarizer works--the exposure meter is sensitive enough to pick up the optimum polarizer setting. Otherwise, the image quality is so good that you wonder why all cameras don't have lenses like this one.
