I looked for a high quality ball head for a long time and I'm VERY happy to have found this petite marvel. Its very light-weight but rated to hold 44 pounds! It has no knobs! Just a metal ring around the middle which can be turned from any side to quickly set any amount of drag for adjustment; the asymmetric ball resists flopping clear over unless totally released. It has planetary gears! A small twist in the tightening direction and those gears put a lock on the head position like it was welded. When the bubble level is centered it doesn't move when the lock is applied. The panning base on the top is smooth as glass and locks and unlocks with a light press on a small lever which, like everything about this ballhead, gives a distinct sense of advanced German engineering! The round mounting base measures slightly less than 2 and one-eighth inches in diameter so it will fit on smaller tripods like my Berlebach Report tripod leveling head. Its small size and light weight is quite remarkable considering how strong it is. Having the ball on the top shrouded in metal is an obvious advantage for keeping dirt and dust from settling on the ball. And it looks really cool! 5 |

This is my second Variable Friction Magic Arm. I had the 196 base and super clamp and would switch back and forth. No more switching now. I use it to hold my D800E camera. The variable friction holds the camera securely in the exact position I want when it is tightened. There is no play or slipping. It is built solid. It's a great product! 5 |

Use backlight base most often for low back ground light stand. Magic Arm and clamp for mounting camera on items. Nice and sturdy with a good weight to it. Can get heavy. 5 |
