I use this product with an ambisonic microphone for location recording. The first day I used it, I was recording an interview with a couple of musicians and had the mic stand sitting on a desk in the corner of the room, with the boom suspended over the musicians' heads. Quite unexpectedly, one of the interviewees decided to play an example on his stereo, which was on the same table - suddenly, his big studio monitors were playing this extremely bass-heavy, percussive MIDI mock-up, and the table was rumbling and rattling, with my poor mic stand on it. Although I haven't seen many alternatives to a table sized studio boom mic stand there wasn't any need to look any further. The Rode PSA-1 does exactly what it is intended to do-allows placement of the microphone exactly where you need it with no boom arms in your face. It moves smoothly and adjusts easily. It allows you the choice of drilling a hole and permanently mounting the stand on your desktop or simply using the clamp system that comes with it. I chose to use the clamp and it is rock solid. A nice surprise bonus was the velcro straps that are included for tying down the microphone cables. Very useful. I use a lightweight Azden shotgun mic which requires a little extra weight to keep it down. I found it convenient to use the large velcro strap and the unused heavy chrome desk mounting pipe as a sliding weight that I could move back and forth on the boom as an additional counterbalance. Works nice and looks nice too. I would highly recommend this boom mic stand for any table situation using a microphone under 5 lbs. It is very convenient and stays out of your way when in use.
