If you are like me, a long time amateur photographer and enthusiastic Nikon user, you will appreciate the d850. I bought the d850 as an upgrade to my d610 and, let me tell you, I'm sorry I waited so long to do so. The ISO range is incredible, the autofocus system is lightening fast, and switching between camera settings is easier than ever. If you're looking for a sign to get a d850, let it be this review.

I have been a dedicated Nikon user since 2008 and for years was sure the D850 would be my next camera but that all changed when I came across the Leica Q2. Despite the Q2 being a very different, and in most respects far more limiting camera, altogether I found myself irresistibly drawn to the Q2 over the D850 and am glad I made the switch. The quality and craftsmanship of the Q2 is truly unparalleled and well worth the high price. The sharpness and clarity of images produced by this camera are the best I've ever experienced, absolutely no distortion or aberrations, with outstanding dynamic range. Couldn't be happier I chose to go with the monochrom version. I don't miss shooting in color and like many who chose the monochrom have found my creativity is now more profoundly expressed. The compact size, light weight & ergonomic appeal were of particular interest when choosing the Q2 over a Nikon DSLR. It's so easy to take anywhere, especially over long distances/periods & draws very little attention. The Q2 is also super easy to operate & utilizes one of the simplest/efficient control layouts. The only drawbacks to the Q2 from my perspective: It's limited to accepting one SD card and has pretty short battery life.

I have been a Nikon user since 1977 as a pro and now retired shooting for pleasure. The D850 is one of the finest Nikon bodies I have ever used. I would strongly suggest reading the manual several times and download it into your device for handy access. Also, it wouldn't hurt to go through online tutorials to take full advantage of the excellence in the camera. The main issues, incredible image quality, works with all Nikon F mount lenses, built like a tank, and a totally pro product. Working with B&H was great as usual. A+!

I didn't hesitate buying Darrell Young's Mastering the Nikon D850 when I acquired the D850. And I'm glad I got it. I had previously purchased and read his Mastering the Nikon D750 and while there are lots of similarities between the two cameras, the D850 is like the D750 on steroids. Very high quality and more capable and complex than the D750. While the Nikon D850 manual can be very helpful, Darrell Young describes each of the features and programs in the D850 more thoroughly than the manual, and it seems to me, with better organization of what you need to know. Also, he almost always finishes a discussion of a feature by telling you how he uses the feature and why. He does this without being pushy or insensitive as to why someone else might view the use of the feature differently.

Rear curtain flash is a function of the camera, not the flash. The flash only does what the camera tells it to do. In your Nikon user manual look under Flash Sync. for instructions for the various sync modes. Sunpak wouldn't know to make an inferior product. I have been using them for a long time and never hesitated to buy an upgraded version.

This camera will just about do it all! To really take advantage of this camera, download the excellent 244 page Reference Manual available as as PDF file from the B &H website.

After my earlier review, I learned more about this excellent camera's 400-page online manual. Some reviewers have justifiably complained about how hard it is to search visually. But since it's a PDF, you can open it on your PC using the free Adobe Reader program, which has its own search field. This allows you to quickly scan the document for specific terms (as long as they match the terms used in the manual). But what about using it on-the-road? I just searched for and found the online manual through my iPhone. And when I opened it and touched one of its displayed pages, I was offered the option to load it as an iBook into the phone's library. This now enables me to search the entire PDF for anything I want, and to click on live (blue) links between its pages. That's WONDERFUL for using it on the road!
