Put A Password On External Hard Drive

Great product. I put my external hard drive in to when travelling.

I use it as an external hard drive for photos.

....it appears so far. This is my second WD backup drive, and my first is still going strong and running flawlessly. I've tried ClickFree as a long-term storage solution, and it's been a bit of a nightmare. I bought this drive to replace it in fact, because I don't trust the aforementioned. This WD transfers files on & off itself quickly. It definitely is an External not a Removable, but it doesn't have the massive footprint (size) my old Verbatim External had. My one bone to pick: It is secure, yes. Kinda. When you install the software you can set it to always remain signed-in from your primary host-PC. Which makes sense, being that it's an External not a Removable! But I also use it with my laptop. I had to install the system-files on my laptop, then when I plug the drive into my laptop I need to manually run any one of the WD software applications so it prompts me for my password. Only after this can I see the drive when it's plugged-into my laptop. It would be nice if the drive was recognized but I was prompted for my password. I keep a copy of the system files off-disk, and I'm sure they're available free from WD's website.

I put off buying an external hard drive for a long time. Now that I have finally bought one I am very happy. Set up was extremely fast. The unit is almost silent and does not take up much space on my crowded desk. This drive will be used to store all the images from my photography business.

It does what every external hard drive should do without fuss. The nicest thing is the build quality and design. A lot of times on smaller films, the data has to move around and doesn't have the luxury of being at a desk. Sometimes I have to put the hard drive on top of the computer or on the laptop. The orange rubber helps prevent the drive from slipping and also feels good when holding in the hand or handing off to someone else. It's the small things that help put this to a 5/5 instead of a 4 or 4.5. Also, I haven't had an issue with formatting, corruption, or degradation of the hard drive so far in a year.

I got two of these drives to put into an OWC external hard drive case (dual elite mini) in RAID 0 for 16TB of storage. I love how fast this setup is, it's bus powered, and noiseless/fanless. So far I have not had any problems and everything has been perfectly reliable.

I wanted an external hard drive to put all my digital photos on. I have both Mac computers as well as PC's. Other hard drives would not let me read the Jpeg files on both computers. This was allowed me to read and write on both. All my pictures are backed up! Awesome!
