First one I've ever purchased. It does what I want it to do. I use it in my recording studio.

I'm using the StudioRAID in a RAID 1 configuration recording security camera videos on a Windows PC. Setup was easy. It's recording multiple cameras 24x7 so it works hard and performs well. I like that there is no power brick. My only complaint is that it is noisy. It's the hard drives, not the fan. I've noticed this with other Glyph arrays. Usually it's not a problem as they are a server room or space that is already noisy.

I'm going to start by getting the biggest elephant in the room out of the way: it's a bi-directional mic, and thus it's day-to-day function is extremely limited for almost all recording purposes. It's only real use beside recording multiple angles at once (think backing vocalists in music) are in M/S and Blumlein arrays. Bearing this all in mind, the mic is functionally very good. It's well built and sturdy, the signal is robust and free of audible self noise, and it captures very transparently with very minimal off axis coloration to compliment the other MKH-series mics. Although I do find that around 1.2-1.3 kHz it benefits from a 1.5 dB attenuation (at least with traffic recording in an M/S configuration). And the best of all is that it's very monophonic. I use this microphone as part of an M/S configuration, complimenting an MKH 8040 Mid mic, and they both work together very nicely. I do find that, when levelled off at equal pre amp gain levels, the 30 runs about 8-9dB hotter than the 8040 with respect to an XY stereo image balance (it seems all MKH run a little hotter than the 8000 series). Not a problem, but somethign to consider when mastering M/S recordings. Overall I'm very pleased with this mic despite its considerably limited real-world usage options. For M/S it works fantastic.
