Reformat For Mac External Hard Drive Disk Utility

I use it for my Mac. I had to work at it to get FileVault to work with it on El Capitan - you need to reformat (no problem) and then partition, for which you need to go to the command line Disk Utility now. Not hard, just that Apple seems to want to dumb down the graphical Disk Utility. If you don't care about that, it works straight out of the box.

The drive is exactly as advertised. The Windows version comes formatted using the Windows NT standard. If you have a Mac and want a color other than black: Buy the Windows version in whatever color you like and reformat it for Mac. To do that, plug it into your Mac, and install the Western Digital Mac utility that comes on the drive. Use that utility to erase & reformat the drive -- you'll get an error message if you try to reformat it using Apple's Disk Utility if you have High Sierra. It reformats quickly and - voila - you have a Mac-compatible drive. If you want to retain the software that comes with the drive, just copy it to your desktop, reformat the portable drive, and copy the software back onto it.

This is a great value-- 5TB will give me the room I need to back up files and archive. This is not the fastest drive but I wasn't looking for speed-- just cheap storage. I was also looking for reliability. This is a good brand. Compact, rugged, and highly visible. Compatible with MAC or Windows. Make sure you use a dedicated cable-- USB C to USB C or USB C to USB A-- no adapters. I tried a USB A adapter on a USB C cable and my IMAC did not see the drive-- not even in disk utility. A regular USB C to USB A cable did the trick. It did not mount directly-- I still had to go in to disk utility but there it was. It comes formatted in EX-FAT but I reformatted easily in to MAC Journal Extended. I was up and running in minutes. I also plugged it in to a Windows 10 laptop before the reformat, and it saw the drive right off. A great purchase and I'm happy with the drive. It's no speed demon, but that's not why I picked it up. Image shows HD and USB C to USB A cable (cable not included).

I just added the WD 4TB Elements External Desktop Hard Disk Drive to my back up solution (6 hard drives) and Windows 10. I disconnected the power and USB cable from a full WD hard drive and replaced it with this new drive and fired it up. It works great, just like I would expect from Western Digital.

Good drive, but if you are a Mac user, be sure to reformat the Drive to MAC OS Journaled. It used to be the case that ExFat was okay if you needed to share a drive between a Mac and a PC user. But with the newer OS updates, my ExFat drives no longer read the data in Final Cut Pro X. What a hassle! I have to buy another one of these just to use it as a transfer tool so I can re-format my ExFat drives. That takes a lot of time and money. Hope that helps someone out there NOT to make the mistake I made.

Wow, I love this hard drive. It is soooooo much faster than a regular old external drive with a spinning disk. I will be able to use this with my base model M1 Mac Mini. I can't wait!

This external hard drive works really nice and quiet, and it saves lots of disk space on my laptop. The price for it is also reasonable.

This external hard disk drive stores a ton and is light and portable. Great for video on the go editing.

The necessary thing to replace the hard drive on your Mac 2011. You are unlikely to buy a brand Apple disk with a built-in thermal sensor, and this kit will allow you to connect any other hard drive. Good luck!
