Rode Ixy Stereo Recording Microphone For Iphone Ipad

As of this writing there are two field recording external microphones for iPhones that utilize the Lightning connector. Zoom iQ7 and the RODE iXY. Essential to the use of the microphones are two apps available through the Apple store. RODE Rec sells for $5.99 and the ZOOM Handy Rec is free. Both apps will work just fine with the built-in microphone in the iPhone and both apps are interchangeable for either the ZOOM iQ7 or the RODE iXY. The ZOOM iQ7 costs about one half the list price for the RODE iXY. I bought the ZOOM iQ7 and am very happy with it. I don't have any way to compare the two directly. The RODE iXY may well be worth the additional cost but I suggest that any potential buyers compare the specs of the two units. I am using the RODE Rec recording app with the ZOOM iQ7 and find it far superior in terms of flexibility. I suspect that both of these apps are just a little past beta testing and there could be improvements in future upgrades. The cost of RODE Rec is nominal in my view and I would recommend anyone interested in these accessory microphones to try both apps.

I’ve been looking for a way to get my Rode microphone to work on my iPhone for quite some time. This was the first cable that actually did the trick.

I purchased this to connect my Rode Stereo VideoMic Pro to my iPhone SE (2020) and it worked perfectly. I can confirm that this is also compatible with the Apple Lightening to 3.5mm adapter as well. That is how I connect it to my phone.

I'm using these headphones with a Rode NTG video mic.I've got the mic attached to my iPhone (USB outout) and the headphones attached to the analog output of the mic. This allows me to listen to the mic output while recording. Works like a charm. The mic has a volume control on the headphone output, but the low impedance headphones are plenty loud anyway. The iPhone is using the Merlin App for recording bird calls. I can now hear those call with clarity.

So convenient to always have a quality audio recording option with this smartlav+ and my iPhone. I use it with the rode rec app and it brings some real fun into recording audio. I've used it with great success as a back up mic for wedding videos. Highly recommended.

This works with DAW on the ipad, allowing 2 channels, either as 2 x mono channels, or 1 stereo channel. It's silent and runs on a 9 volt battery, great for quality recording in the field. I think the output to headphones (used when multitrack layering) is a little weak, but at least that reduces the spill over to the recording microphone. B&H have the best price I could find.
