Rode Microphones Videomicro Mobile Kit Review

2024-06-21 09:56:45

The Rode VideoMicro microphone is a great addition to any mobile video kit. The directional mic does really well with picking up your subject and filtering out ambient noise. The boom pole that comes with this kit is lightweight yet sturdy and is a great addition to the mobile kit. The cable that comes with the kit allows you to use the mic with the boompole. The cable works for cameras, but not for mobile phones.

I have tried several different on-camera microphones (Rode VideoMicro, MXL, Sennheiser) and they all sounded awful because of the weak mic output level. The VideoMic Pro actually works because it has a switch that will give you a 20dB boost of the mic's output. This hotter signal from the mic allows you to turn down the noisy preamp on your camera and essentially lower the preamp hiss.

I sometimes mount my Rode VideoMicro or VideoMic Go II to my GoPro's when I need an ultra-mobile kit. When I also want to use the fur shield to help block wind, it gets in the viewing angle when using a wide shot. This high quality cold shoe mount helps elevate the mic to keep it out of the shot. Plus I can mount a wireless mic kit or multiple lights as needed. I like that it features stops just in case I forget to tighten things down when on the go. Somewhat high cost, but quality is buy it for life.

I own a Rode VideoMicro and I was looking for a deadcat (furry windshield) for it because I shot a video at Lake Champlain a few months ago and the audio is essentially unusable because of the noise picked up by the mic without a deadcat. And looking for one, I found that the replacement piece made by Rode (Rode WS9 Deluxe Wind Shield) costs 25 dollars! Other knockoffs are about 10 bucks. Later, I found this kit by Polsen for only 27 bucks! I mean, I did not need another microphone, but for basically 2 dollars, I got the deadcat I was looking for, plus a spare mic! That's a deal. Now, in terms of quality of the sound; I tried them both and the sound quality is the same as the Rode or maybe a hair better. At least, it sounds a tiny bit warmer to my ears, which I like, but most of the work I do is indoors for my YouTube channel. So, yes. Absolutely get this Polsen kit. Best value on the entire internet right now (as the time of this writing).

Works fine to extend Rode VideoMicro cable for off-camera use.

Just great! I bought one to go on a mic stand so I could attach my Rode VideoMicro to it.

For the price point, the RODE VideoMicro is a solid on-camera mic for capturing clear, quality audio whether for a scratch track or use in your video. It also is of the highest quality in construction - solidly built. But, what makes this such a solid piece of gear is that it has such sound quality that it can double as a small boom mic when paired with RODE's extension cable... so, you Beginner Filmmakers... save yourself some money and invest in this versatile microphone! HIGHLY Recommend!!!

The Rode VideoMicro may be small but you can really hear the difference...much more depth to recorded audio. A well priced solution to the shortcomings of the built in mic on my Nikon D5300.
