Doing DSLR video on 5D mk. III ... the audio normally had to be recorded on a separate audio recorder. A royal pain for simple interviews, etc. Waited for a quality on-camera mic that was BATTERY, not phantom powered. Reviews of cheap existing mics were NOT encouraging. Finally this model came out... and I have used it constantly. Up to about 8 ft. from the camera, its STUNNING on voice and good at off-axis rejection. At 12 ft from the camera there is definite ... too far awayness sound. But way better than the other shotguns I have and paid much more for. it works flawlessly with the Mk. III's auto level control as the Mk III is another royal pain to try to manually adjust audio levels. You want to move up with your DSLR's audio (or any voice work with any video camera)? This model is a Bargain!

I normally don’t make reviews, but I thought someone should come in and defend the honor of this gadget after a couple less-than-stellar reviews. For a DSLR/Mirrorless shooter, this thing is a must-have. It’s just a supremely handy thing to have in your bag when you need it. When I’m shooting for the big screen, or need isolated audio tracks or phantom power, I’ll pull out my MixPre. But for simple web videos when that’s overkill (whether interview or run-n-gun b-roll), this thing’s great when you want to get 2 audio sources into the 3.5mm input on your camera. Obviously, there’s no pre-amps or phantom power, so I tend to only use with sources that have their own built-in preamps (like wireless mic receivers or a Røde videomic pro). I can lav up two subjects with my Sennheiser wireless mics and record each subject to a separate channel on my camera (on on the left, one on the right), which is amazing flexibility to have. Or I can run a wireless lav into one channel and my Røde Videomic Pro into the other and have that great lav/shotgun flexibility. All in all, can’t say enough good things about this device. Dollar-for-dollar, no device expands the audio capabilities of a DSLR/Mirrorless camera like this thing does. Just make sure you set your expectations right. And that means plugging in devices that boost their own signal.

Wireless is great until there's a problem. That's why I always carry backup cords to a shoot on location.

Works just as well as my notebooks internal wireless card. It makes a good backup solution.
