Shooter Suite Instant 4K

I work as a shooter/editor and this machine can handle my 4k workflow easily.

The G7 is the product of Panasonic's many years in the micro 4/3 category. The 4K video capture as well as it's 4K Photo modes are unequalled and are class-leading for cameras well above it's price range. The ergonomics (handling) are excellent with great feel and lightweight heft. As a Sony A7II full frame shooter, I know what superb image quality is and the G7 does produces very nice images. The micro4/3 standard allows for very small lightweight lenses and really makes users want to carry a few lenses for hikes and photo trips (My A7 & lenses are super heavy!) I enjoy using the G7 when I want an easy stroll with a few lenses and the G7 rarely disappoints. The weak point of all m4/3 cameras are they don't handle low-light as well as their bigger counterparts, so if you're a dim light shooter know you'll see more high ISO grain compared to larger sensor cameras- aside from that the G7 will produce fantastic images at 1/3 the price and weight! The camera is a bit plastic feeling, but it's not a bad thing- plastic tends to take drops well and allows the camera to be super lightweight at a lower cost- at it's current price point- I'll take the plastic body anytime! The G7 does NOT have any image stabilization so if you're adapting manual lenses, you'll need a steady hand or tripod.

This camera far surpasses my expectations. I shoot nature, environmental and fine art imagery with some video. I have been an FX shooter for quite a few years but started out with the DX format. I was drawn to the D500 for it's ability to reach further with my existing lenses, as well as its ability to shoot 4K video. I was not prepared for the stunning still image quality and ISO capabilities. I had heard about the autofocus improvements though, over say the D810 and D750 but you have to experience the speed of acquisition and the ability to track moving subjects to believe it. Having the focus points spread across the viewfinder is just wonderful. Makes composition so easy. The camera's ability to achieve focus in very low light is enormously helpful. High iso image quality is stunning. I never shoot above 3200 and images at that ISO are 100% usable, even for good sized prints. The 4K video is of a very high quality. The focus touch screen is very useful for video (and stills) but if you try for continuous focusing for video I still find some hunting. I use AFS to establish an initial focus point and then rack as necessary though I rarely do that kind of work. The crop is what it is but I have a nice Tokina wide angle (11 - 16, F2.8) which gets me to just around 24mm. I find that more than adequate. Video then is very good, but a GH4 or Sony might make for an easier experience if you are predominantly a video shooter. Finally, the focus touch screen and release is excellent for use in focus stacking. Overall then for image quality, autofocus and some terrific bells and whistles this is a very find camera to use.
