Silence Audible Recording Studio

I have used this microphone only a few times since I was given it as a gift (but I did ask for it specifically). I have used it on my Pentax DSLR and there's a little static when there's silence, but when recording on the computer there is practically silence when there is no sound. This means that the microphone has almost no static itself. I think the only thing I don't like about this microphone is that the switch goes right up to On instead of the low pass filter (the little line between) but other than that it works very well. I like the tripod screw on the bottom, the aluminum body, the single AA battery use, and the plastic holder.

First, 60W will probably meet your needs in a small video studio. I only use 2-8% of the output. Secondly, a standard modifier platform (Bowens' S mount), has saved me a great deal of time. The lower cost silent heads would only accept barndoors, gaffing tape and aluminum foil. Far Far easier to repurpose old modifiers or purchase new. Previously, I would have to retape the foil at inopportune times. SILENCE is critical for me. Recording a cast once correctly is worth all the post processing in the world. Nothing beats SILENCE.

Sometime the best live recordings are combination of room mic and direct feed from a board. The DR40x fits that bill nicely. And even has a built-in mixer w/ fx adjust for each of 4 channels. The only reservation I have is when I did a test voice recording, the noise floor was audible. There should be no audible self-noise in a professional recorder. But this unit had it. Bottom line - OK for recording music for reference or note taking. I wouldn't use if for critical pro recording.
