Sn850X 4Tb Review

I have now put three of the SN850X drives in my computer 2 of them a re 4TB and the other is a 2TB. All of them are running perfectly with zero issues. I love that WD provides the best drive clone software you can get with your drives for free. This is not a program they made but one that is made separately and they purchase for you to use to have the easiest time when you do finally need to replace an SSD at its end of life. I had a 970 Samsung that had started to fail and I was able to clone it before it died all together. I got one for my nephew and tried it in his system a MSI Bravo 15 laptop and it would not play well with that system. I found out MSI in those laptops do not like that high of speed of a drive. I found this funny because MSI says it is a gaming Computer.

It's an amazing MoBo! Maybe a small drawback with the design of the cooler for Gen4 M2 SSDs which is a single piece for both SSDs so you can either install 2 SSDs without a heatsing or can't use the suppliet heatsing. Gen2 M2 slots have separate heatsink for each of the 2 M2 slots. Beware the WD SN850X SSDs - these aren't detected in this MB's Gen4 M2 ports (firth the latest BIOS and firmware as of Dec 2023), but are seen in Gen5. Both WD SN850 and SN850X seem to work in the Gen5 M2 slots but you waste Gen5 slot for a Gen4 drive and in general there seem to be a lot of compatibility issues between these Western Digital SSDs and X570 & X670 chipsets (across various MB manufacturers). Otherwise I love the this motherboard, and I think the compatibility problem is rather issue of Western Digital SN850(X) M2 SSDs

The SN850X is an excellent upgrade to the standard consumer-grade SSD that came in my workstation. Great performance and great price per gigabyte of storage.

I needed more space on my PS5 and felt like the cost of the WD SN850X with the heatsink was just too much. I bought the regular SN850X without the heatsink and added this to my purchase. This saved me a substantial amount of money and it has the added benefit of the heatsink being the door or cover for the drive meaning I get better cooling. My SN850X is still lightning fast and I saved a lot looking for a better option. I recommend this.

Works great once its set up correctly in the bios. Installed alongside the oem wd_black m.2 and used the included acronis subscription to move my OS over to the sn850x. I had to reset the cmos to get it to boot, and had to reformat the original drove to stop windows from reverting my boot order. I was initially disappointed in my benchmark scores before realizing that the pci lanes are intertwined in a way that both drives are affected. Basically, it made my original drive appear much faster than normal and the sn850x slower than advertised in testing. In real-world use, its fast and stable though. The dashboard app is also nice to have as well. Mine is mounted behind the GPU with no heatsink and never reaches above 60° at full load.

Along with the WD SN850X I also purchased this drive as you cannot go wrong with either one in my opinion! This SSD is very fast, comes with a Heatsink already attached and a snap to put into my PC!! Whether you purchase this one or the WD SN850X, you simply cannot go wrong with either one and I Highly recommend it!!!

Installed a WD_Black SN850X 2TB in it, and it works flawlessly. Comes with M.2 screw and silicone pads of different thicknesses.
