I use this when recording bands in my studio... It has been great in comparison to my Sony brand batteries as well. It is very nice to not worry about running low on voltage when filming!!

I decided in the Zeiss Batis over the Sony 85mm 1.8 only after seeing comparison photos. The Sony seemed nice and was cheaper but the Zeiss Batis 85mm just seemed to have nicer color pop! So far I’ve been very happy with my choice. The lens focus fast and quiet on my Sony A7Iii and I love the images I’m getting! Along with B&H service and quick shipment, I couldn’t ask for more!

Let's get the bad stuff out of the way first. This is a heavy lens. It's quite the beast. Loaded on an A7ii with Sony's Vertical Grip it's a rather beefy set up. But compared to the bigger brother SLT Carl Zeiss A-mount lens, it's comparable maybe a few grams lighter. And it's that CZ lens that bares comparison. The lens is just as sharp, has about as much pop and is every bit as good as CZ without having to attach Sony's proprietary LEA3 or LEA4 adapters, which unfortunately have their issues. Focus is quick and clean. There is no hunting issues that I've notice while shooting stills. I've pushed this lens hard (along with the camera's steady shot) and have been able to get sharp pictures two stops below the optimal shutter speed. The range of the zoom is very good and for most shots it's retired my Zeiss 16-35. Having that extra f stop is nice, for hand held shots but not all that necessary when a tripod is used. I have found the Bokeh exceptional, but this is a matter of taste. Your milage may vary. It is very smooth with very little of the nervousness you may find in other lenses. As I have only the CZ A-mount for comparison I can say that the Bokeh is comparable, which is great praise if you have used that lens. As a walk-about lens it is excellent once you get over the weight. Many times I have decided not to pull out a different lens because the GM could handle the shot with aplomb. Often, I have just left the camera backpack in the car and just gone with this lens and the A7ii body. It's a much easier set up than hauling around the extra lenses and added weight. The only caveat I have is that like any zoom you do have to sacrifice low light ability. There are times the relatively slow 2.8 aperture gets in the way. Sometimes you really do have to reach for that speedy prime. Overall, I would rate this a What are you waiting for? lens. If a tax return is in your future I would definitely recommend using it to buy this lens.
