As any SSL product, this mixer/interface is very well built and has awesome sonic quality! It is definitely worth the price tag! There is a small learning curve, but for anyone whose worked with analogue mixers before and digital audio interfaces, there should be no problem. As a mac user, I definitely appreciate not having to install any drivers and being able to just connect to my iMac or Macbook and start recording right away. I think this product is perfect for anyone who wants a complete recording interface, plans to add analog sound to their recordings or mixes, or plans to add external gear.

I just bought an SSL Nucleus 2 desk from B&H which comes with Dante Audio IO and while I’d love to get a full rack of SSL IO (14k) this box does a really awesome job as A&H preamps have really great low SNR! The app is super simple to use - want 48v? Need a pad? Quick easy no messing about. I use this in a recording setup where we need to be able to record drums and a full band on some occasions on location, so this is an awesome setup now as we can take the A&H and the SSL Nucleus2 literally anywhere and record superb quality with live instruments and 48v Phantom Power mics! (You can add more of these if you need them but this was enough for us alongside the SSL Nucleus2’s onboard IO) I was having clocking issues with two 8 channel Focusrite units (FireWire) when used with Dante Via so I gave up and went this route. Super simple setup, powerful with A&H + SSL in my case but could also be with A&H desks which are also great if not more for live sound than recording from a UI perspective (which is why I went SSL for that piece fwiw)

There are times when I regret not having purchased DMX enabled versions of my studio lights. With this control paired to an SSL-836 I got first hand experience on the importance of remote control of studio lamps. If there was an upgrade to the SSL-36 I would immediately buy one or each of my 4 lamps. Now I am wondering if I can justify a few more SSL-836 lamps. This is not a substitute for all the functions of a DMX board, but it does what I need in the studio. I can dial in the lighting while looking at the exposure values on a camera waveform monitor. I just added my second to my overhead rail system replacing 2 of the SSL-36 4x36 lights. They have moved to another location. You should know that one 8 panel outputs 40% more lux than two 4 panels. The two 4 panels are now repositioned to the clam shell configuration demonstrated in the Genaray setup video. They are a great new configuration for me, opening up the area under the eyebows, nose and chin. I love the image. Strip lighting gives shadowless lighting on infomercials and tutorials. It makes studio lighting effortless. And is a vast improvement for me over mounting a bank of rectangular panels. Now that I have two, I thought I could easily control the intensity of both with a single SSL-RC wireless remote. I does tune to 4 different channels as does the SSL-836. However, when you change channels, the last setting you used gets transmitted to the new channel. For example, setting channel A to 50% gets transmitted to channel B when you switch the controller to it and engage. So, if you need individual control over multiple lamps, you will need to buy a separate SSL-RC for each and leave each tuned to a different channel. For me use in a studio, one works because if I need to dim lighting I will dim all the lamps equally and for this a single SSL-RC works perfectly. The remote is not a substitute for a DMX panel, but it does give me the control I need for ceiling mounted lighting.
