Studio Effect Voice Recorder

I have not had a chance to use the KSM8 extensively, but I was very impressed with the balanced tone. In the studio, I used it direct-in and almost forgot that I wasn't using EQ. When live, for my voice I needed to drop off some bass, and give the 1khz a bump up, and a smaller bump ahead of it, because I like air. But, yes, it has minimal proximity effect, but just enough to feel like you can eat the mic and get some power without spiking the bass. But be advised at first I was not sure if I would like it, because I was so used to using an SM58, that I kind of missed the proximity effect, which is a valid effect!... but this thing is a different animal, and I am getting used to it now and it makes alot of sense. With an SM58, I always felt like I had to artificially manipulate how I sing in order for the vocal to come out the way I want to hear it. When I first tried the KSM8, I was totally oversinging, and feeling slightly anxious because the mic wouldnt respond to my usual way of singing in an SM58. WIth the KSM8, I feel like I can sing more naturally (as if I were singing unplugged without any mic)... I would say it is definitely not the same as no mic, and I still have to watch my sibilance a bit, but especially plosives when close to the mic, but it's way easier to control that an SM58 which always requires a heightened state of awareness to ensure that you are aligned correctly and twisting your diction enough to come out of the PA cleanly and as desired. The plosive issue seems to disappear when I pull off the mic. When in the studio, the KSM8 reminded me of the EV635A/B which I had recently used to record poetry, as it is also a mic made for the human voice, and requires minimal EQ.... I am not a Microphone master, but to my ear, the EV635 and KSM8 had a similar flat EQ suited for voice, with a little bit of sizzle in the high end. Highly recommend this mic. 5 |

This recorder does a great job when you're doing voice-over an field recordings away from your studio. In my case, I buy quality and this fits the bill for a great price and B&H Photo has never let me down as a distributor. I own several high quality studio microphones, so XLR inputs and phantom power were a MUST HAVE. Love the full color graphic equalizer and the multiple clip indications. Very intuitive, but folder system could be better. Make sure you perform initial setup, especially date and time for accurate date stamps on your files because you will not want to waste time renaming files. Used this for outdoor nature recording too and the microphones that come with it do an amazing job at a nominal (3 of 10) gain setting. This product is a winner! 5 |

This stand alone multi-track recorder had a steep learning curve for me, but, after learning basic operations such as open menu, create and/or load songs; assign microphone XLR/TRS jacks to a channel (easy) and basic recording operations, this unit is very fun to operate. Granted this unit has been out for quite a few years, and I had debated buying the 32 track recorder, but opted for this 24 track and have had a blast. Send effects unit ( taking a dry unaltered recording signal and making it wet adding effect with an effect such as reverb or delay) was tricky. Recommend turning the volume all the way up and adjust down to get the effect to your monitors. This unit is so much fun am now going to splurge on some really nice microphones. My recording will include solo work with and without keyboard; trio and quintet jazz and ensemble work, and larger ensembles. 5 |

This is an outstanding little recorder. The most important feature on any of these field recorders is the mic preamps. They are clean and they have plenty of gain for use with dynamic mics. The unit can also drive a line output if you want to record sound on your DSLR at the same time. This recorder is very solid. It's made from die cast METAL. Not plastic. It's a bit heavier than you might expect. But that's the price you pay for a METAL enclosure. The front panel is a bit cramped. I wish the gain controls were knurled. (They are smooth.) And these gain knobs seem to operate an internal electronic gain control. There is a very slight delay in operation of the gain knobs. It's like they are damped for smooth fades. I did notice that the built in mics do seem to suffer from the zipper effect that plagued the DR60. When you move the gain knobs on channel 3-4 with the internal mics assigned there is a faint zipper noise when you move the gain knobs. If these same inputs are assigned to the the XLR inputs there is NO zipper effect. So Again... The gain controls work smoothly with NO zipper effect on all 4 XLR inputs. The preamps are clean and very quiet with plenty of gain. The headphone amp is adequate. Not super great but it's loud enough to drive most headphones well. I think this is the best DSLR pre-amp recorder option available today for under $1000. It lets you record 4 discrete channels simultaneously. It has 24/48 volt phantom power. It has clean mic preamps. It has effective limiters. It runs on AA batteries or an internal USB battery. (Or both with automatic switchover.) It's compact & rugged. Only things I wish it had were a slightly more powerful headphone amp with a clip indicator and a slate mic. Otherwise I think this little device has just about everything you would need. And you can't beat the price! 5 |

The Olympus digital voice recorder (WS-400S) is a great stereo reorder. With the ME-52W Noise Cancellation Microphone the recorder is a fabulous dictating machine as well as a conference recording device. The microphone is small, sensitive, excellent and effective. It comes with several attachments that make it ideal for many, many uses. 5 |

I use this Zoom recorder for recording voice overs with the Rode NT1-A Condenser Mic. The recorder is easy to use, captures great audio and is nice and compact. It is also durable and something I'd feel totally comfortable bringing out in the field with me. 5 |

I'm a new owner of the H5 and this product is better than I had hoped. I primarily will record acoustic voice and guitar. I've found the on-board mics are amazingly good and I may not need to add an external mic (though I'll be doing some tests to confirm that) since I can get a nice balanced voice/guitar mix just by setting the recorder about two feet in front of the guitar soundhole and mic levels to about 6.5. Amazing. Recorder position in the room is really critical. If I move away from the mics, I get more of the room sound, meaning reverb/echo/reflections. Easy experimenting to find the right spot for the sound you want. I suggest a small tripod, makes recorder placement all that much easier. I haven't yet played with the overdubbing feature but I'm looking forward to that. 5 |
