Recently I shot my first broadcast TV commercial with a DSLR. One shot was a low angle with the sun at about 2 o'clock in front of me. Thankfully I had a C- stand, black flag and an assistant, but what I really needed was the Flex lens shade. While the flag helped me see the shot, it didn't protect against flares, and it was a slider shot. I had some versions with sun flares and some without. Turns out the client didn't like the glare in the shot, and I was just lucky I had enough takes that I found one without a sun flare to replace it. Budding cinematographers beware...lots of people still consider sun flares bad camera work, rather than a cinematic touch. the reason you see it so often is many movies are shot at golden hour with the sun low in the sky, a prime condition for flares since the sun is also often used as a back light. Anyway, not having an expensive matte box, adding the flex shade to a quality variable ND filter will give you almost all the benefits of both. At this price, it's simply a no brainier.
