Time Machine Backup External Hard Drive Disk Utility

I bought this hard drive to use with Time Machine on my Mac. I literally just plugged it in, then the computer asked me if I wanted to use it as my Time Machine backup and I clicked yes. Presto. Done. Didn't install any software, it's just plug and play. (I had to buy a new external drive because I got a new computer and the old backup drive would be completely overwritten if I used it for Time Machine. This one is about 1/20 the size of the old. Since I work upstairs in my bedroom at night sometimes, it's nice to have an external drive that is completely portable. This way I tend to plug it in for a backup more often instead of waiting until I am downstairs again.) I actually bought an extra one for a different computer.

I use this drive as the Time Machine backup disk for my laptop running OS X Yosemite; it works nicely. With the drive on my desk, I can still hear the cooling fan, but I don't mind it. I think the device is well designed (easy-to-use and looks good), and it has a good warranty.

When you have a 4TB Mac laptop and want Time Machine backups that keep old versions of files and folders around, you need a backup drive bigger than 4TB. This 8TB drive, formatted with APFS and encrypted, does the trick. Old fashioned mechanical disk drives take forever for Time Machine backups. Since Time Machine runs hourly, it's nice having a drive that can backup everything quickly. This was an expensive solution, but it is so nice knowing I can revert to an old version and keep a lot of old versions of stuff around. The peace of mind is a big payoff. This may sound weird, but I mainly use my laptop at home, sitting on my couch with on my laptop - of all places, sitting on my lap. I just taped this drive to the lid and plugged it in to a TB port and it backs up while I work. Yes, it looks ugly as sin, but I mainly look at the front of my with the screen and keyboard. I don't sit staring at the laptop lid with an SSD taped to it. Besides, there's nothing prettier than a properly backed up disk.

I got this hard drive for a system backup. I am checking to see how it works with Apple's Time Machine. So far it is working very well. I will then get another one just like it to rotate Off-site to protect my data. This is in addition to a cloud storage.

I purchased this 8TB version because I needed more space. I have trusted Western Digital hard drives as backup drives for my MacBooks for over 10 years now and never had a failure. I purchased this external hard drive so i could back up my 2012 MacBook Pro with time machine. I was able to format the drive for the time machine and had absolutely no issues doing it. I was also able to partition it so it can also be used as a regular drive so i can store photos and videos. Out of the box, the device was flawless and powered up immediately when i plugged it in with USB. No power adapter necessary. When it's running when its recording or reading, its silent and there are no vibrations or rattling noises. Considering the 4TB storage capacity and the fact it's not SSD, this is quite a small device. I've been using Western Digital for over a decade and have never had any issues. In my opinion, they are the best devices and i would recommend them to anyone. They are the best bang for the buck!

Purchased as a Time Machine external hard drive for my MacBook Pro. Works very well - plenty fast for backup tasks. Very quiet operation compared to the Western Digital drives I tried out. Great for long term storage of data as SSD drives are prone to data loss over time if not powered on regularly. Learned this the hard way :-/
