Top 1Tb External Hard Drives

The LaCie 1TB Rugged USB 3.1 external hard drives are affordable and very reliable. I own and use quite a few of them and have never had a problem with them. While they aren't as fast as a solid state drive (SSD), they are handy for backing up data and/or transferring data from one computer to another. 5 |

I purchased two WD 1TB Elements Portable External Drives from B & H. They were recommended by my PC guy so I would have one for ongoing use and another for periodic backup. The drives are easy to use, sturdy, & compact. B & H website was secure & organized. Ordering online was easy. The drives arrived promptly in protective wrap. Thank You, B & H Foto & Electronics 5 |

You can get most other 1TB hard drives for under $85 but you wont be able to throw it at a concrete wall like this one. 5 |

I now have 7 of these WD external drives. They include 1tb, 2tb and now a couple of 5tb. I started buying them in 2015 and that one is still reliable, though the one I purchased a year later has started acting squirrely. The rest of them continue to be fast and reliable places to store my data and photos. 5 |

So much smaller than my old 1TB external drives, and getting power from the USB is great. I haven't had it long enough to say anything about it's durability, but so far, so good. I will be buying one or two more in the near future. 5 |

For several years I have been using the small Samsung USB-C external drives (almost credit-card sized) -- I used two 500GB and one 1TB drives along with Carbon Copy Cloner and my MacBook Air. That worked well (although the 1TB became corrupted and unusable about 3 months ago) and I would especially back up the drive before any flight and separate the drive from my laptop at TSA. I just upgraded to a (wonderful!) MacBook Pro 14 and attempted a Migration Assistant transfer from the Air using a fresh Samsung backup. I let it run for about 8 hours and it never got past the first Looking for applications and documents... stage. To cut to the chase: I thus ordered this 500GB LaCie drive and did a fresh CCC backup from the MB Air. It took 7 minutes to backup 400GB of data! Using the Samsung with USB-C it would take 13 mins for ~22GB. (See screenshot of CCC logs.) I hooked the LaCie up to the MB Pro and started Migration Assistant. The whole process took ~15 minutes. Previously it would take hours. Sorry for rambling on. TLDR; A wicked fast external drive worth every penny. And Thunderbolt makes a huge difference! 5 |
