Underwater Camera Flash

This is a great addition for my TG-5 Camera. It allows for more light to give my macro shots greater background detail. This Macro Ring should not be confused with the FD-1 Flash Diffuser. They function very differently. This Ring uses the built in LED of the camera to add additional lumination to your image. The FD-1 uses the built in Flash for additional illumination. The difference bewtween them is the Macro Ring allows for more detail in the surrounding area of your primary image while the FD-2 illuminates the entire area gving less background details. If you like to experiment with Macro Photography with your TG-4 or TG-5 I suggest you get both. A last point, the LG-1 Macro Ring is not meant for underwater photography but the FD-2 is. Here is a direct statement from Olympus: "Please Note: Although the LG-1 can be left on the camera when underwater, it is not recommended as an underwater lighting accessory as the results would not be desirable. The FD-1 may also be used underwater" 5 |

I took shots at dark. The camera saw what I could not. It is going to be quite useful in my underwater adventures. 5 |

Here is the most important thing you will need to know... IT WORKS! Putting your 5D Mark III into a body of water with a $2500 dollar lens and a flash does not feel natural in any way the first time you ease it into the water. But life is life and if it was going to leak I was going to find out the hard way, It did not leak. Humidity packets that came with it got rid of fog. The only tricky thing is that you really need to dial in your settings before getting in there, or use it on full auto. I shoot in Pools in Manual and it worked fine with a bit of going back and adjusting settings again. Direct flash looks terrible underwater as it does above water, so I am still not sure I will use flash again for my underwater needs. Great thing is I can turn flash on and off through the housing anyways so, not a big deal to have there just in case. The plastic does warp your lcd image and makes it look cloudy, the first time I thought everything looked terrible until I took it out of the thick plastic housing. Bottom line, this works, and the company that makes it guarantees your gear in case of manufacturing failure. KEEP YOUR RECEIPT! 5 |

I purchased 3 of these strobes to replace my YS-D1's last summer after both strobes failed on the same dive. So far the D2's have been a good replacement with a few upgrades. I have been a long time user of manual strobe exposures underwater but the TTL setting has been very good both with macro and wide angle lenses using the D2's and fiberoptic flash cords. The D2's have a few new features that are helpful. I have been nervous to use the 2450 mh 1.2 v rechargeable batteries after both of my D1's failed underwater on the same dive due to the flash elements shattering when they fired. So far I have had no problems with the newer D2's using 1900 mh 1.2 v. Overall, I think the Sea & Sea strobes are better than my previous Ikelite strobes but they use more battery power and require frequent charging if you take 100+ pictures per dive. 5 |

I looked for these on two or three other underwater camera/SCUBA gear sites with no luck. Of course, when I went to B&H, they were available. 5 |
