Unifi Route Vlan Internet

Not much else to say, intergrates well with Unifi and makes it easy to configure VLAN support.

If you need a switch that can be managed by unifi and do vlan tagging this switch is perfect especially at its price point

I wanted to set up a dedicated vlan for my "internet of things" (hue lights, smart thing, google home, roku, etc) so they would just have access to the net to download updates, searches, etc, but not have access to everything else (NAS, other computers, etc). That required both a wireless network and dedicated ports to be associated with the VLAN.� While I had done this with a couple consumer routers (flashed w/ tomato and merlin), I didn't like the disjointed setup, administration, etc. Bought into the ubiquiti unifi ecosystem and love it. Powering my access points by just connecting an ethernet cord makes setting this up trivial. Went for the 16 port switch (rather than the 8 port) because it seemed the sweet spot for price vs expansion. It also provides greater flexibility in number of devices and poe requirements (poe+ vs just poe) when compares to say the 8 port w/ 60w.� Setup with the switch (in unifi console) was trivial. Assigning ports to a specific VLAN was as simple as selecting an option in a drop down. Powering my access points was simply plug and play. The USG was more of a pain to set up due to it defaulting to the 192.168.1 network, but worked around that with some fiddling. I wish the switch better supported a wall mount option out of the box. The included brackets only work for rack mounting as they'd stick out beyond the switch if rotated in any other direction. Could work if you don't mind the switch sticking out a little from the wall rather than sitting flush.

These switches will get flagged in your Unifi control panel as limited VLAN control, but that should still cover most use cases. You can define any port as either receiving your full VLAN configuration (i.e. one default untagged VLAN, and all of your tagged VLANs), or you can define it for any of your VLANs as a single VLAN only. For the home/small-office environment and a five-port switch, there really isn't much use case for anything else, especially at this price point and full Unifi integration.

Before I acquired the Unifi U6 Lite as part of the wireless upgrade solution (including a Unifi Dream Router - UDR and U6 Mesh Access Point), my client's wireless internet speed from their ISP modem was just 7.16Mbps... After the Unifi upgrade, not only did we have increased and more reliable wireless coverage, but the recorded internet speed test jumped from 7.16Mbps to 522Mbps...a 72.90 times speed increase!!! Impressive!!

This small, light, little add-on is worth its weight gold for those with UniFi network stacks. Due to the wiring for my cable internet (from the ground to the telephone posts), it has frequent bouts disconnects to my modem whenever it gets windy. This thing has made it a far less of a hassle to reboot the modem as it does it on its own. My only complaint is it may be a bit wonky with detecting internet outage until you do a firmware update on it, but has been rock solid since. But if you have a UniFi network stack, just buy it, plug your modem to it and forget about it.

Product requires almost not set up. Make internet connection, add the drives, download the UniFi app and that pretty much it! Enough storage for my needs and requirements. Strong housing.
