Wd My Book Essential

I purchased the WD 6TB Elements Desktop drive in April 2021. It's now June 2024 and the drive is performing great. I already had a WD 4TB My Book drive but was getting close to running out of space for my music, photos, videos, and documents. I've been using these drives every day for about 6 hours and both drives are still performing like new. My 4TB My Book has over 22,000 runtime hours and my 6TB Elements has over 14,000 runtime hours.

The WD My Book Desktop is a great external drive to use as a back-up drive. I opted for the 16TB drive to allow room for future expansion and flexibility. The drive works seamless in the background as expected and does the job as expected.

If you are going to use this device with a Mac, you (may) need to contact WD technical support to guide you through reformatting prior to use. The reformatting process is logical, but can not be installed using the internal Mac disc utilities, you will need to install WD's download and use tech support to help make this a quick and easy process. This device, ( of which i purchased two) an 18TB My Book, will be used here as back up to my 48TB G Raid 4 bay Shuttle. I do not use the cloud for storage and would prefer to house my own back up. My digital life began with an ever increasing number of By Book's in the 1990's, and then migrated everything to G Drive storage. What I have done now, in this purchase is consolidate 12 G drives into, 1 48 TB G 4bay shuttle and 2- 18 TB My Book drives to bring of my storage needs up to date, with space available for adding data for a few years to come. This series of recent purchases represents my continued loyalty and trust in the performance reliability of products from WD for well over two decades.

I needed to remove the hard drive from a failing vintage WD My Book . I needed to find an enclosure that still supported FW800. If you value the photographs that you capture, you need to back them up. With built in encryption and smart backup tools, WD My Book is the way to go. This is an exceptional backup drive to store your valuable photographs or other data.

This is a great product. I used to have the WD My Book, but it died after 4 years. This product is much more easier and comfortable for regular usage. In my opinion, there are 2 Major advantages: 1. It is large enough to backup my info and does not require connection to an outsource power. 2. It works seamlessly both with Mac and PC. I mostly used this product to move files around and backup my computers

Although my My Book did not come with the easy setup card, I called and was able to get help setting up my new WD Book. I have had my previous WD backup Book for about 10 years, but it was no longer backing up, but definitely got my money's worth on that drive.

My only problem is that I have so many ways to use this I do not know what to store first. But I take a lot of photographs and this will be wonderful to store them in and the size is just right.

This generation of 8TB WD My Book drives performs a bit better than the previous one! The WD80EZAZ hard drive this WD My Book unit is based on can manage roughly 180 MB/s sequential reads and writes. The older models that included hard drives like the WD80EZZX could only achieve about 130MB/s. That means the new models have improved by 50 MB/s. Well done, Western Digital!
