Wind Blow Instrument

This mic will pretty much blow your mind with how clean it records. The brass instrument clip isn't that great. It wouldn't stay secured on the trumpet I mounted it on. Plus, certain mutes will prevent it from mounting entirely. I'm sure the clip is very instrument dependent, so plan for backup mounting options. When in doubt, gaff tape. 5 |

I love, love, love this. I have purchased many stands in the past but none have been this nice. I will have this forever. This one is not made cheap. It is heavy but at least then you know its good. On top of that, it will not blow down in the wind. You will need to get the Avenger stand to go with it but believe me, you will not regret this purchase at all. 5 |

After recently having a light stand blow over from a gust of wind during an outdoor shoot, I was on the look out for a heavy, yet compact solution. This stand is exactly that. I shoot solo majority of the time so having an assistant to hold a lightstand down typically isn't an option and making multiple trips to the car to get sandbags or other items to secure the stand isn't very convenient either. Enter the Mighty. Aside from shooting during a hurricane, tornado or other gale-force wind producing weather, this stand gives me peace of mind knowing my monolight won't blow over regardless of the size wind-sail, errrr I mean, light modifier that I'm using. It's relatively compact at 36 so I don't have to worry about knocking it into to people while walking around with it too which is nice. And fits easily in the trunk or backseat. Although it is heavy, it's definitely possible to carry it with one hand and if you can't -- I suggest you hit the weight room. I carry this bad boy in one hand, monolight in a case in the other and a backpack with my camera, lenses and other necessities. That's all I need, everything in one trip. No time wasted filling sandbags or worrying about broken monolights. Also, the levelling-leg is invaluable feature. I love this thing. Probably the best two hundred bucks I've spent on gear in a long time, possibly ever. 5 |

I like everything about this stand but if you are doing exterior shots you need the Ricoh Stand Weight TT-1 because it doesn't take much wind to blow it over. The camera breaks easily when it does. I have a friend that instead uses a 2.5 lb barbell weight successfully as well. I still like the stand a lot. 5 |

I must admit, the first time I unboxed the instrument, I was amazed at the build quality. It has some heft, the keys are properly and ergonomically placed and you know Akai really took their time to perfect this wind controller. But as a long time saxophone player, the first time I actually played some scales, I was quite disappointed - it didn't feel like a saxophone. I was beginning to regret my purchase and thought about exchanging it for the WX5. So I gave it a few more days. Days turned to weeks, and I am beginning to appreciate this instrument. Keep practicing those scales, breathing with the mouthpiece and you realize how this is such an amazing wind controller. I made a mistake thinking that this is a replacement for a saxophone in an apartment situation. In reality, you should think about how this instrument can be an extension to your musical endeavors. The possibilities you can do with the sounds and playability are endless. There are a few usable synths prebuilt, but I suggest using the Akai EWI 5000 Editor to really play and edit your sounds then save it to the user bank. Also there are synths out there that can be used if you plug the EWI as just a midi wind controller; unfortunately you can't upload other synth sounds into the controller. Definitely give it some time to get used to the instrument especially moving from one octave to another. Keep practicing and you'll appreciate that there's hardly any moving parts here. I was opposed at it first since horns have that tactile and key feedback. But with the touch sensitivity, it really felt I was playing an instrument from the future. Again, you just have to get used to it - think about when mobile phones shift from physical keyboards to the modern phones we have today. And here I am today still keeping my purchase and writing a review. I thank Akai for making a top-notch wind controller and continuing the support for the modern electronic wind musician. 5 |
