When I learned the Surface Dial can be used with my non-Surface Windows 10 PC, I bought it as a perfect solution to having a volume knob to mute and control the volume as I listen to video with widely varying volumes between program segments and advertisements. I needed this for a Microsoft Windows 8 Surface Pro as it only had one USB 3.0 port. I tried a non-powered hub only to find out that when using an external hard drive, it would consume most of the available power from the computer, leaving other attached peripherals unstable.
