A: No, there is no removable backing. You'll need to buy the plain white umbrella if you want to try shoot thru lighting.

A: These modifiers throw light about 180 degrees according to Wescott's website. They do recommend using multiple lights for large groups. So Mathematically, beam spread calculations say "beam width = angle x .018 x distance". To cover a 20 foot line of people you would need to place the light 6.1728 feet from the line. So yes! I place it directly behind me centered in the group, slightly above & tilted slightly down just over 6 feet away from the group.
