While the coarse thread filters can also be stripped, I have yet to ruin one. For me, its just a personal choice, but I make sure all of my filters are compatible. I also have put filter adapter rings on all of my lenses to make them all take 77mm filters and lens caps. I have 8 lenses (including an 80-400mm Nikon Zoom and my largest diameter is 77mm so I took all of my lenses to that size. It eliminates purchasing duplicate filters in multiple sizes and makes all of my lens caps fit all of my lenses.
